Living Longer
Living longer is one thing and enjoying those extra years is quite another.
These simple longevity tips can go a long way toward both living longer and enjoying better health.
Live Longer. Tips for Adding Life to Your Years and Years to Your Life
Balance Activity and Rest: You should balance your activities with the proper amount of rest. Some of the leading
experts in the field of aging now believe that regular exercise along with the proper amount of rest may actually
add years to the life span. Results from a number of tests indicate that speed and muscular strength of many of the
elderly can be extended.
Leading authorities agree that this new data is going to shatter many of the myths about aging and physical performance.
The conclusion now is that the performance and ability of the elderly has long been underestimated, diet, proper
sleep and exercise along with rest and relaxation are all important factors in preserving our bodies.
Laugh More: Laughter is one of the best things for your mental and physical state. People are naturally attracted
to someone who has a good sense of humor. You can develop a good outlook and a good sense of humor by associating
with and surrounding yourself with pleasant happy people.
Reduce Stress: Recognize that stress is a killer. A life filled with stress can really wreak havoc on your body
causing a number of illnesses such as hear attacks, strokes, asthma, gastric problems, menstrual disorders, ulcerative
colitis, angina, irritable colon, increased blood pressure, ulcers, headaches, etc. There are different types of
stress such as mental, emotional and physical. Emotional stress seems to take the greatest toll on everyone. All
stress is not bad; in fact, life would not be very interesting if it were not met with challenges. However, too much
stress, too often with no effective and appropriate outlet, does not allow the body and soul to recuperate. You might
review a typical week to see if you can identify things that might be making you anxious or causing you stress. Once
identified, stressors can be attacked and eliminated.
Worry Less: Are you a worrier? Chronic worriers don’t have more serious problems than others – they just think they
do. Many worriers try to cope by trying not to think about their problems, but this just makes things worse. Doctors
say that chronic worriers feel less anxious if they actually spend a half-hour a day thinking specifically about
their problems.
Exercise Regularly: Get plenty of exercise. People who are physically fit look good and feel good. A good exercise
regimen will lengthen your life. Improve your appearance, build self confidence and help delay the aging process.
Remember that you need to do something physical every day. If you don’t use your joints, quite simply they’ll tighten
up with age to create the stooped, bent and worn out appearance we so often associate with old age. Studies have
shown that people with arthritis experience less pain if they continue to keep their joints flexible. As one gets
older, the bones tend to get brittle which is why it is common for senior citizens to break bones and especially
their hips when they fall.
Eat and Sleep Right: Eating right, getting proper sleep and learning to relax are all very valuable in maintaining
a healthy body and mind. And keep in mind that eating healthy foods and avoiding those high in fats, sodium and cholesterol
will help to decrease your risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and associated problems.

NSAIDS: The most serious healing issue. There is mounting clinical evidence that using
NSAIDs blocks the body’s synthesis of proteoglycans.
These are the molecules that draw water into the cartilage.
The result? While you may be getting some pain relief, you are also increasing the problem with the damaged cartilage
as well. And the worst news is still unconfirmed but suspected. The use of NSAIDs may actually cause osteoarthritis
to increase. In other words, while trying to get some symptomatic relief, you are also hastening the very disease
you are trying to control.

Healthy Snack Ideas
Try a raw vegetable platter made with a variety of vegetables. Include some good fiber choices: carrots, snow peas,
cauliflower, broccoli, green beans.
Make sauces and dips with nonfat plain yogurt as the base.
Eat more fruit. Oranges, grapefruit, kiwi, apples, pears, bananas, strawberries and cantaloupe are all good fiber
sources. Make a big fruit salad and keep it on hand for snacks.
Plain, air-popped popcorn is a great low-fat snack with fiber. Watch out some prepackaged microwave popcorn has
fat added. Remember to go easy on the salt or use other seasonings.
Instead of chips, try one of these low-fat alternatives that provide fiber: toasted shredded wheat Squares sprinkled
with a small amount of grated Parmesan cheese, whole-grain English muffins, or toasted plain corn tortillas.
When you are thirsty, try water, skim milk, juice, or club soda with a twist of lime or lemon.
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and the National Cancer Institute are committed to promoting good
health and reducing the loss of life from heart disease and cancer. You can help. By using the ideas in this article,
trying recipes that have been modified to decrease fat and sodium and increase fiber, and planning menus that are
high in fiber and low in fat, especially saturated fat, you may reduce the risk of these diseases for yourself and
for those you love.
A Quick and Easy Start with a Great Breakfast – No Breakfast Is Better Than A Kellogg or Post Breakfast, not!
Cereal companies have done an incredible job of marketing their products and convincing the vast majority that their
cereals are healthy and nutritious.
Their target marketing to children has played an important roll in raising their sales to astronomical numbers.
Actually, these cereal foods are loaded with sugars and starch, and are good at helping you get fat and developing
diabetes.
You are better off eating no breakfast than eating many of the popular cereal breakfast foods.
Other standard breakfast offerings that fit in the same category are muffins, donuts, Danish, etc.
All of these breakfast offerings contain massive amounts of sugar or they contain pure carbohydrates that the body
converts to sugar.
Loading your body up with these kinds of foods every morning will overburden your pancreas trying to produce enough
insulin to cope with the heavy load of sugar you dumped on it.
This heavy sugar load can wear out your pancreas leading to Type 2 or Adult Onset Diabetes.
Let’s face it if this is the kind of breakfast you and your kids are into, then you have become “sugar addicts” which
is probably the most common form of addiction in the world
Prior to World War II, diabetes was called exactly what it was “sugar diabetes.”
To People Who Want to Start with a Great Breakfast but Can’t Get Started – Quick and Easy Breakfasts
A good breakfast is a healthy breakfast that contains little or no sugar.
Your breakfast nutrients should not vary very much from the kinds of foods you eat the rest of the day. High in
protein, 10% to 20% in natural fats, and very little carbohydrates.
Eat eggs. This is almost the perfect nutritional food. You can prepare them in so many different ways for taste
and you can vary them each day. I eat 2 to 3 a day.
Steak and eggs are great and super healthy.
Bacon and eggs. Make sure the bacon is not the pre-cooked kind which is loaded with nitrates or nitrites, cancer
causing preservatives.
Poached fish or pan fried, if you use butter, is a great source of protein and your omega essential fatty acids.
Natural cheeses are good. Stay away from processed cheeses, they are not healthy at all, and be sure the cheese
you choose has not been homogenized. Homogenization destroys the digestive enzymes in the cheese. Organic cheese
is best.
Need something sweet with your breakfast? Have a piece of whole fruit not canned or juice.
Wash it all down with a cup of Rooibos Tea or a cup of black coffee.
With your energy filled breakfast packed away, you’re now ready to go out and conquer the world.
Eating a smart protein and natural fats dominated breakfast is part of a total health program that everyone should
be on to maintain their youth, and be forever younger.

Water – The Urgent Need for Filtration
Here is another great holistic health article from Ira:
According to one book I read, by a medical doctor, by the time we feel the real need for water, we are already dehydrated.
I’ve changed my attitude about water’s function. I no longer look at it as something to take care of a problem,
like thirst. I look at water as something my body appreciates getting all day long. It was only after starting
to drink water differently that I could see it made a difference in me. Try it.
This article is from Ira at Good Health Supplements. It covers another important aspect of drinking water – make
sure it’s pure water you drink.
Water makes up over 80% of our body. It’s the very essence of our life and oh how we mistreat it. No human or animal
can live without potable water, and yet we carelessly contaminate it.
Here are some of the problems we face with our water supply and some of the many reasons why my wife and I have
a reverse osmosis water filtration system in our kitchen for our drinking and cooking water.
Municipal water systems only test for 6 pesticides yet there are 35,000 registered pesticides out there containing
600 chemical compounds. Birth defects, nerve damage, sterility and cancer are known to be caused by many of these
chemicals.
The World Health Organization estimates 75% to 80% of cancer illnesses may be caused by the water we drink and the
environment we live in.
The General Accounting Office reports that 20% of the nations 65,000 community water systems are unable to meet
minimum standards set by the Safe Drinking Water Act.
A recent government study found that more than 25% of all large U.S. public water systems contain traces of one
or more toxic substances public water systems do not test for the carcinogens and other dangerous chemicals that
are being found.
Gene Rosov, President of Water Test Corporation, a national water testing firm, says 20% of all water samples contain
some kind of bacterial contamination and as much as 30% contain measurable lead.
EPA revealed that dangerous chemicals are leaking out of as many as 16,000 landfills throughout the U.S., percolating
down through layers of soil into the vast underground water reservoirs called aquifers.
One Federal study found 87% of the conventional sewage plants discharging excess pollutants. Even when the plants
work well, they can’t remove much nitrate, heavy metals or pesticides.
Many of the 200 or so chemicals on the EPA’s priority pollutant list cause cancer and other ailments long-term exposure
to even minute amounts of most organic chemicals endangers the public.
Trihalomethanes are created when chlorine reacts with decaying organic matter in the water. This group of four organic
halides contaminates 90% of this countries drinking water. All four compounds including chloroform, banned as an
anesthetic in 1976 are either known or suspected of causing cancer.
There have been thousands more tests and many more reasons to support the need to filter your water. In the town
next to mine, their water supply comes from wells which contain a level of arsenic much higher then is listed safe
for human consumption.
And if you think that bottled water is safe, you had better think again. Most bottled water come from the tap or
wells that have the same pollutants that your tap water has.
I marveled when it was reported that a gasoline spill showed up in the water supply of a community over 300 miles
away.
Shop around. Search the Internet for the best deals, but get a water filtration system to help your short and long
term health.
For excellent filtration, look at reverse osmosis. I use it myself. All the best health to you. Ira Marxe, Good

Healthy Food Tips – Eating Healthy and Enjoying It
Some people eat to live and others, like me, live to eat.
I enjoy food and look forward to every meal with expectations of taste and a satisfied feel in my stomach at the
end of the meal.
Being health conscious, I find my choices have narrowed somewhat over the years, but I also see a light at the end
of the tunnel because so many of you have become more demanding as to the quality and healthiness of our food,
and I’m happy to say that many companies and purveyors of food are beginning to take notice.
I’ll tell you about these companies in later Health Matters Minutes articles but right now let’s talk about some
good tasting foods and spices that can add measurably to your health.
Eggs: I love eggs and I eat them every day. Did you know that eggs can help prevent heart and eye disease?
Actually eggs are one of the best overall food sources available. They are very low in saturated fats and provide
lots of important nutrients. The yolk is one of the best sources of lutein, an antioxidant that scientists today
believe will help prevent age-related macular degeneration.
The egg yolk does contain 213 milligrams of cholesterol, however, new research finds that the yolk also contains
“phosphatidylcholine” which appears to inhibit the absorption of cholesterol into the blood stream.
In fact, a landmark study of 38,000 men in The Journal of the American Medical Association, part of the ongoing
Health Professionals Follow-Up Study, concluded that eating eggs each day is unlikely to play any roll in heart
disease.
Since spinach is another rich source of vision-protecting lutein, how about some eggs Florentine?
Blueberries: They rank the best. Tested with 40 different fruits and vegetables by researchers at the USDA Human
Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, was found to have the most antioxidant power.
In fact, one half cup of blueberries will get you twice as many antioxidant nutrients as the average American consumes
in a full day and only 40 calories too boot.
Use blueberries in your cereal, bake a pie, mixed in a salad, as a solo snack or as a side dish with poultry and
meat.
Turmeric: A great spice that lends zing and yellow color to curries and mustard as well as giving you numerous health
benefits.
Besides helping to ease arthritis, muscle and postoperative pain and swelling (without the side effects of pain
medication) it may also act as a cancer-fighting agent.
The healing power of turmeric comes from its active ingredient “curcumin.” In a study published in September
2003, in the medical journal “Blood,” researchers found that adding curcumin to cancer cells suppressed
most of them and stopped others from spreading. More recent research on laboratory animals has shown that eating
curcumin may protect skin during radiation treatments. Get in the habit of keeping some turmeric handy and replace
some of the salt and pepper with turmeric in your cooking.
