Have you heard of the saying “you are what you eat”? What you eat and drink affects not only how you feel, but also how you look. Heavily processed, fatty and sugary foods, as well as sweetened drinks will leave you feeling sluggish and looking drab. On the other hand, a well-balanced rich in fruit and vegetables will make you feel energetic and give your skin a natural glow.

How do antioxidants benefit your skin?

Your skin will look younger, more supple, and have a natural glow when you regularly include fruit and vegetables in your diet. Beta-carotene, lutein, lycopene, selenium, and vitamins A, C, and E are all antioxidants that are found in fruit, vegetables, fish, poultry, and grain. Antioxidants repair damage to tissue and help prevent future damage from occurring. They also slow down and even block the effect of free radicals by fortifying cells against damage.

Antioxidants protect the skin from the inside from the harmful effects of sunrays. Antioxidants also provide anti-ageing bonuses: they help the body repair and rejuvenate itself with cell and tissue growth, including reducing and preventing wrinkles and fine lines from appearing.

Fruit & vegetables for healthy skin

You can derive endless benefits from incorporating fruit and vegetables into your diet. A few popular choices are considered below together with how they benefit the skin.

Strawberries are a great source of antioxidants. Strawberries contain vitamins A and C, which protect the skin from damage and help fight against ageing.

Oranges, as well as all citrus fruits, are a great source of vitamin C. Vitamin C helps the body produce collagen, which is what prevents wrinkles and sagging. The antioxidant vitamin C also helps preserve the body’s vitamin E levels, which in turn helps protect the body cells from damage.

Apples enhance natural skin toning. Apples also contain pectin, a starch that helps heal and prevent acne.

Carrots and celery are a good source of fibres, which enhance digestion. The optimal functioning go the digestive system keeps the body clean and the skin healthy.

Recipe for a fresh juice

Woman Drinking a Glass of JuiceIf you mix all the ingredients above-mentioned, you will obtain a strong antioxidant drink which will take care of your skin. Here’s how you make it.

Try to use organic and locally produced fruit and vegetables whenever you can. Depending on where you live, this may vary at different times of the year. Not only are you supporting your local farmers, but you reduce your ecological footprint.

You’ll need a blender, a cutting board, and a small knife for this recipe. The fruit and vegetables for the juice are:

  • 10 strawberries, washed, trimmed and diced
  • 3 large oranges, washed, peeled and diced
  • 3 small stalks of celery, washed and finely diced
  • 10 baby carrots, washed and finely diced
  • 2 cups 100% apple juice (if you have a liquidiser, you can make your own apple juice, which would be preferable, otherwise you can buy some).

First, ensure the pieces are small so they do not clog the blades of the blender. When you are ready, add the apple juice to your blender. Add the carrots, and blend until all small chunks are gone. Then add the celery and blend until smooth. Next, add the diced oranges and blend well again. Last, add the diced strawberries and blend until smooth. Your natural food juice is ready. Serve and enjoy!
