The story of Dr. Terry Wahls achieving a healthy state of wellness following a debilitating diagnosis of multiple sclerosis is not only inspiring but an example of an amazing holistic medical breakthrough.
Using intensive nutritional therapy, Wahls transformed her state of health from being wheelchair bound to riding a bike in a mere six months.
Her treatment and research inspired her Food as Medicine lecture series, where Wahls discusses with her colleagues and the general public the vital link between our food choices and our health.
Wahls Succeeds with Theory on Nutrition
Academic physician in the field of internal medicine, University of Iowa professor Dr. Terry Wahls is a leader in the field of nutrition interventions for a variety of diseases. Wahls treats patients at her primary care and traumatic brain injury clinic using the same intensive nutrition program she researched, designed, and used to treat her own debilitating condition of multiple sclerosis.
In 2000, Wahls was diagnosed with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis. By 2003, her diagnosis had been reclassified as secondary progressive multiple sclerosis, and Wahls was completely confined to a wheelchair. It was at this time when she began researching various theories about multiple sclerosis, and eventually postulated her own.
After designing and implementing on herself a trial program based on her theory, Wahls was transformed from wheelchair bound to riding a bike. The time period? Six months. The intervention program? An intense approach to nutrition.
Food as Medicine
Since the dramatic outcome of Wahls’ nutritional therapy, she now shares her knowledge in lectures for her colleagues and the public on the essential link between food and health. These lectures have been recorded and make up the revolutionary Food as Medicine DVD series.
Included in Food as Medicine, Part One are the first two lectures Wahls presents on the subject. Food as Medicine: Introduction examines the basic concepts in the process of using food as medicine for overall wellness. Obesity, Starvation, and Addiction examines the links between starvation—which depletes our storages of vitamins, minerals, and essential fats—and obesity with food addictions.
Mitochondria: Power House for Our Cells
Essential to Wahls’ theory is the health of our body’s mitochondria. Mitochondria is what supplies our bodies with the cellular energy it needs to operate, including essential metabolic tasks. Deficiencies or abnormalities in the mitochondria are associated with many diseases, including multiple sclerosis.
Wahls stresses how proper fueling of the body’s mitochondria with vitamins, minerals, and essential fats found in proper nutritional choices is vital to not only the proper functioning of our body, but the body’s ability to combat or prevent a number of illnesses and diseases.
Presenting a Powerful Approach to Holistic Health
Throughout the video, Wahls speaks in a clear manner that allows viewers to achieve a greater understanding of how the foods we include or exclude in our diets can have a profound impact on our wellness. Specifically, Wahls explains:
- how to use our diets to impact our mitochondria; and
- how to boost our brains and bodies through eating habits.
Wahls emphasizes that eating gives us an opportunity to feed our cells properly, which in turn lets us live healthily. Food as Medicine is a powerful DVD series that will inspire many people to look at the food choices they make—or don’t make—with a whole new perspective.
Viewers who are interested in natural and holistic healing to target autoimmune diseases, such as MS, should first watch Food as Medicine, Part One, and follow this up with Dr. Wahls’ supporting book, Minding My Mitochondria 2nd Edition.
A portion of the sales of Food as Medicine, Part One goes toward research funding of nutritional strategies for people with neurological disorders.
