There are many different factors that can cause joint pain.
Symptoms of arthritis are not always contributed to arthritic conditions, but can be caused from other physical problems.
Dr. Leia’s answer to the following question offers insight on the topic of calcification that can build up in the body’s tissue and how this condition can be confused with arthritis.
The Aches and Pains of Aging
Question for Dr. Leia: As I and my friends age (50’s age range) we have been told that our aches and pains are due to calcification.
I have seen others who are my age and they don’t have these aches and pains, why me?
I don’t quite understand how and why calcification occurs?
Am I doomed to live with this in my pain in my body and joints, which will increase as I age, or is there anything I can do to stop or even reverse the calcification?
Dr. Leia’s Answer: Many people don’t understand the difference between calcification and arthritis.
Arthritis is not synonymous with calcification. When experiencing pain in the neck, hands, knee, or other parts of the body it doesn’t mean that it is caused from calcification. Most often inflammation has set in.
Calcification refers to the long-term process of laying down and depositing calcium salts or crystals in the soft tissues of the body where calcium does not usually belong.
As we age, the tendons and cartilage can break down and degenerate, thus causing calcium deposition in between the fibers and soft tissues. Aside from the aging process, calcification can also be caused from trauma, and it can also be found in athletes and those who participate in extreme sports, or those people who have suffered injuries when they were younger.
In turn, tendon and cartilage trauma and degeneration leads to an inflammation, irritation, and ultimately tenderness, aches, and pain. Treatment for acute calcification includes ice, rest, pain medication, cortisone injections, gentle exercise, and even surgical removal or debridement if necessary.
If you want an alternative natural treatment, Acupuncture works to increase the blood and chi movement in the affected areas, and helps to decrease the aches and pains associated with the calcifications.
There are also effective traditional eastern herbal combinations which your acupuncturist will prescribe to help with the inflammatory reaction and to ease the pain. Certain natural anti-inflammatory supplements include:
- bromelain and quercetin
- fish oil capsules
- essential fatty acids or Omega 3 fatty acids
- pycnogenol
- turmeric
- bioflavonoids
- glucosamine-chondroitin complex
- MSM
- Boswellia
- ginger
- white willow bark
To help control, prevent or minimize calcification, aside from avoiding trauma and aging, eat a healthy diet with lots of fruit and vegetables. Also avoid processed foods, sugar, high salt, and food additives. You want to avoid allergenic foods from your diet, too.
It is important to include a good quality multivitamin and mineral supplement with adequate B vitamins and vitamin C as a part of your daily health and wellness routine.
