When taking prescription medications it is wise to support the liver with natural supplements and herbal products. This supports the liver so the body does not escalate in building up toxicity.
The following question and answer offers some insight into the toxicity of prescription drugs prescribed for psoriatic arthritis. Dr. Leia points to the need to keep on a liver cleansing regime to continually give the immune system additional liver support since it becomes over taxed.
Holistic Advice for Psoriatic Arthritis
Question for Dr. Leia: I have psoriatic arthritis. The arthritis part is not so bad—some joint pain, but not bad at all. On the other hand, my skin is a mess: cracked, scaly, and peeling red spots—some that are very large.
I have tried many creams that I use daily, and they do help some. I also take vitamins: Fish Oil 2000mg and C 1000. In addition to all this, I’m also on Lipitor, Paxil & Protonic.
Just wondering if you might have any advice that you could provide.
Dr. Leia’s Answer: As you may know, psoriatic arthritis is a chronic form of inflammatory arthritis which involves both psoriasis or skin inflammation and arthritis or joint inflammation.
I am sorry to hear that you have tried some heavy duty prescription drug remedies and have had adverse reactions to them or no response to your problems. Because you are on several chemical drug prescriptions, it is possible that your liver is toxic and may need assistance to release some of the chemical build-up from the drugs you have been taking.
Whenever the liver is overtaxed, the skin suffers, causing flare-ups of your already chronic skin problem of psoriasis. The skin is the largest organ of elimination, and if there are toxins in your body, they will show up in your skin. So, with this in mind, I would recommend that you seek out supplements which will help to support your liver in its cleansing process.
The Liver’s Cleansing Support
Milk thistle is a good herb that helps to support proper liver function and body detoxification. Start slowly at first, then gradually increase the dosage.
Do not be alarmed if the skin lesions and inflammation increase temporarily, since this may be the body’s response to ridding the liver of some of its toxins.
However, since your are on several chemical drugs at the same time—and I am assuming that they have been ongoing for several years—then it will be difficult to completely rid the liver of its toxic build-up.
Another wonderful detoxification product is called Orenda Immune and may be beneficial for your condition. However, I will caution you that detoxification processes and supplements may make the condition temporarily worse before it becomes better. Since the causes of your liver toxins are part of your daily routine, this makes it even more difficult for you to do detoxification protocols.
I highly recommend that you seek out a professionally licensed naturopathic doctor in your area, an experienced licensed health professional, or a holistic medical doctor to help you with your problems. Please do not go off your prescription medications without your prescribing doctor’s advice and consent. Good luck in your search for balance and health.
