Prostate Cancer - Causes and Symptoms and Beneficial Lifestyle Changes and Supplements

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland located at the base of the bladder that surrounds the urethra, the tube through which urine exits the body.

The prostate gland produces prostatic fluid, the main component of male ejaculate that helps nourish and transport the sperm.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among American men today, and African-American men are at an increased risk of developing the disease. Cancer of the prostate is linked to aging and tends to affect men after the age of 50. Eighty percent of the cases occur in men over age 65. Some experts believe that every man will eventually develop prostate cancer, provided he lives long enough.

General Prostate Cancer Information - Possible Causes of Prostate Cancer

The exact cause of prostate cancer is not known, but some risk factors have been identified that are linked to its development. Men age 65 and older, African-American men and those with a first-degree relative (brother or father) with the disease are at an increased risk of developing prostate cancer. Other risk factors include a history of venereal disease, recurrent prostate infections, testosterone therapy, a high-fat diet and exposure to cancer-causing chemicals. The likelihood of developing potentially life-threatening prostate cancer varies depending on global location.

Possible Symptoms of Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is a slow-growing cancer, with tumors usually doubling in size approximately every six years, as compared to breast cancer, which commonly doubles every 3 1/2 years. Prostate cancer often presents no symptoms until it reaches advanced stages or spreads outside the prostate gland. Possible symptoms of prostate cancer include pain or burning during urination, frequent urination, a decrease in the flow and volume of urine, difficulty urinating, bloody urine, a feeling of incomplete emptying of the bladder and on-going lower back and pelvic discomfort.

Possible Lifestyle Changes for Prostate Cancer

Men can lower their risk of developing prostate cancer by consuming plenty of whole grains, fruits, vegetables legumes and fresh vegetable and fruit juices. Foods high in lycopene (like grapefruit, watermelon and tomatoes) and zinc (such as mushrooms, pumpkin seeds, seafood, spinach and sunflower seeds) also help guard against prostate and other cancers. Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily and restrict intake of dairy products and red meats. Enjoy regular sexual activity; it activates the prostate gland and keeps it from getting stagnant and inflamed. Physical exercise also helps retain health and lowers risk of prostate cancer.
