Prostate Cancer Screening Tests

Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Test is one of the ways in which doctors test for prostate cancer. The PSA Test (Prostate-specific antigen) measures this substance that the prostate makes that is added to semen to make it more fluid. This helps to carry sperm and aids in ejaculation. Normally It is present in the blood in only very small amounts. This is because there is a good prostate-blood barrier in the absence of prostate problems.

When you take a PSA test it measures levels of PSA in the blood. Currently, this is the best available marker for prostate cancer because cancer interrupts the barrier between prostate and blood, so levels in the blood increase. Therefore, this is the earliest indication of cancer. However there are limitations with this test. This is because cancer is not the only thing that increases PSA levels. This can also happen with an enlarged prostate gland that happens with age (benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH). When this happens more PSA is produced and gets into the blood.

There are also other conditions that can do this such as inflammations of the prostate which can disrupt the prostate–blood barrier. This results in elevated blood PSA levels. Because of this scientists are studying ways to improve the ability of the PSA test to target better cancer detection.

There are also other cancer screening options that are often combined with the PSA test to determine if cancer might be present.
