Migraine Information and Natural Treatments for Headaches

Migraine Headaches is a biological disease that affects more than 30 million Americans.

With better diagnosis and with reporting of this disease on the rise, an almost 60 percent increase in prevalence of Migraine over the past decade has been noted. Migraine is a neurological and oftentimes hereditary disease.

Migraine is typically characterized by severe, recurring head pain, usually located on one side of the head and one or more of the following associated symptoms:

  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • increased sensitivity to light, sound, and smell
  • lightheadedness
  • diarrhea
  • scalp tenderness.

Migraine headache symptoms vary for each individual sufferer, making diagnosis complicated.

Many breakthroughs regarding the biological and genetic causes of Migraine have been made in recent years. And while certain of the exact biological mechanisms are still being studied, it is known that Migraine is caused by neurological, not psychological, mechanisms.

Hence, breakthroughs in treatment offer hope and relief for millions of people who suffer from the physical and emotional pain of migraine.

In the past, migraine tended to be managed in a way that either prescribed drugs that helped prevent attacks or those that treated during an attack but not both.

Modern migraine management is based on the multi-factor approach that addresses four aspects of care: preventative treatment, trigger management, abortive treatment, and general pain management.

Note: Migrin Headache Formulas: It is believed migraines are the result of certain neural cells misfiring within the brain. This causes Serotonin levels to fall, blood flow to increase and head pressure to mount.

The medicine available and recommended by our Doctor in India leaves you with side effect of weakness, lethargy, and a low urge to eat. Is there something better available as a cure and not just a suppressor?

Dear Sanjeev, Migraines can be debilitating and even sometimes difficult to treat. Hopefully, your Doctor has done tests to try to find out the cause of your migraines. Migraines can be triggered by hormonal fluctuations, environmental or food allergens, physical and emotional stress, toxic chemicals, bright lights, loud noises, odors, skipping meals thus causing low blood sugar or high insulin levels, alcohol, and cigarette smoke. Migraines can also be triggered by ingesting high tyramine foods such as aged cheese, red wine, beer, figs, smoked fish, beans, and highly processed meats, such as hot dogs, cold cuts, and chicken liver. Additionally, stay away from mono sodium glutamate, artificial sweeteners, especially aspartamine, peanuts, nuts, chocolate, caffeine, apple juice, tea which is high in tannins, citrus fruit, onions, avocado, dairy food, excess sugar, and preserved, pickled, or fermented food, like sauerkraut and olives. So, first, try to eliminate all of the above things from your diet and environment. After avoiding all of the above factors and you still get a migraine, then you should treat it immediately so that it does not become more severe. Immediately rest in a dark room, drink plenty of water, so as not to become dehydrated, especially if you are vomiting, and place a cool damp cloth on top of your forehead or on the back of your neck. Some natural remedies which might help your migraines include the herb feverfew also known as Tanacetum Parthenium. If you have any allergies to ragweed, yarrow, or chamomile herbs, then you cannot use feverfew, because it belongs to the same family of herbs. If you take too much feverfew, it will cause gas, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nervousness, nausea, and vomiting. Feverfew also affects the clotting time, so if you have any bleeding disorders, or are having surgery, you should not take it. Magnesium, taken in 600 mg. per day by mouth may also help with migraines. Foods which contain magnesium include nuts, seeds, whole grains, and green leafy vegetables. The mineral magnesium relaxes all of the muscles of the body and plays an important role in many biological processes of the body, and has a calming, relaxing effect. Other things which could help migraines include: co enzyme Q10, vitamin B2, known also as riboflavin, at a dose of 400 mg., biofeedback therapy, relaxation techniques, Homeopathy, and Acupuncture. An individual Homeopathic Medicine can be prescribed for you specifically by a Homeopathic Doctor, and Acupuncture can work wonders for balancing the energy meridians of the body and for relieving pain. I hope that you can find something from this list which will help your migraine. Good luck.
