Learn About Vaginitis and what are the main causes and who is the most susceptible to this type of infection.

Vaginitis

Vaginitis is an inflammation of the vagina, responsible for an estimated 10% of all visits by women to their healthcare practitioners. The three general causes of vaginitis are:

  • hormonal imbalance
  • irritation
  • infection

Hormone-related vaginitis includes the atrophic vaginitis generally found in postmenopausal or postpartum women, and occasionally in young girls before puberty.

Irritant vaginitis can result from allergies or irritating substances.

Infectious vaginitis is most common in reproductive-age women and is generally caused by one of three types of infections: bacterial vaginosis, candidiasis or yeast infection, or trichomoniasis.

Additional predisposing factors for candida infection include the use of antibiotics, oral contraceptives, or adrenal corticosteroids. A healthcare professional should be consulted for the diagnosis and treatment of any vaginal infection.

Grapefruit Seed Extract

The Extract from the Grapefruit Seed is rapidly becoming the number one safe herbal solution for chronic vaginal and intestinal yeast infections (Candida) and thrush.

One doctor has reported success with 295 patients out of 297 being treated for chronic yeast and parasitic infections. In a test of 20 patients with vaginal yeast infection, 15 had relief of their symptoms in only 3 days after douching with grapefruit seed extract every 12 hours.

A GSE douche is used for vaginal infections and capsules or liquid drops mixed with juice for internal infections. Grapefruit Seed Extract is safe with no side effects and as a liquid may be used as a gargle and may be swallowed. And it has dozens of additional healthy benefits. It's a strong anti-bacterial but doesn't seem to hurt beneficial bacteria.

Various other supplements have been shown to benefit those with Yeast Infections, Thrush, and Candidiasis. Pau d'Arco teas has strong antifungal properties.

Yeast Infections, Candida, Candidiasis

Candida albicans is a yeast-like fungus that normally lives in healthy balance in the body, found mostly in the intestines, genital tract, mouth, and throat. When the balance is upset, infection results. This is known as Candidiasis and the fungus travels to all parts of the body through the bloodstream.

In the mouth, it is called Thrush; in the vagina, it is called Vaginitis. It affects both women and men but is rarely transmitted sexually. Women with diabetes have more yeast infections because their vaginal environment is more conducive to the yeast growth.

Corticosteroids and oral contraceptives should be avoided, as they may upset the normal and healthy balance of the body. The most healing diet for this condition is one that is fruit-free, sugar-free, and yeast-free.

Phytonutrient: Ribonucleic Acid: We believe it will not only help one to look and feel younger, but that it will aid in ridding the body of toxins, repair genetic sequences and alterations, desensitize the blood to allergies and promote general youth and vitality. P-RNA is just such a product.

Fulvic Mineral Complex contains approximately 74 essential complexed and dissolved minerals and trace elements with 42% fulvic acid. Fulvic acid acts as a refiner and transporter of organic materials and cell nutrients. Whenever minerals come into contact with fulvic acid, in a water medium, they are naturally dissolved into an ionic form. These minerals literally become part of the fulvic acid itself. Once the minerals meld into the fulvic acid complex, they become bioactive, bioavailable, and organic. Thus, when elemental minerals are transformed into an organic state, through a natural chemical process involving fulvic acid and photosynthesis, they are safe to be used by both humans and animals.

What herbal or natural remedies are available for vaginal dryness that interferes with sex? My Dr. prescribed an estrodial ring that caused unpleasant side effects. I've heard of an estriol ring, but cannot find any information on this being available in the U.S. Any information would be much appreciated.

Susan, I would look into a product called Emerita Personal Moisturizer. It was developed just for women in Peri Menopause or Menopause that are experiencing vaginal dryness. The product is herbal, water based, non-staining, and washable. It is available at many retail outlets.

I have used Red Clover Blossoms 430 mg three times a day for approx three weeks, and I am now having what I think is a period. I was not expecting this to happen at 60yrs. of age. Is this to be expected when taking Red Clover?

Dear Brenda, Red clover has estrogenic activity which means that it may respond similarly to the hormone estrogen in the body. Because you are bleeding, it tells me that your uterine lining is still viable or alive, and is capable of shedding each month. Of course, estrogen when given cyclically to menopause women can promote shedding of the uterine lining. The keyword here is cyclical. You took the red clover for three weeks, and then noticed the bleeding. Human women have monthly bleeding cycles whereby they shed their uterine lining each month. There still isn't a whole lot of evidence and research out yet about the long term effects of taking phytoestrogens, or plant estrogens. Their effects are still unknown. However, the dosage of red clover blossoms which you took seems excessive to me. Most of the menopausal preparations containing red clover only have 50-80 mg. of the standardized phytoestrogen in the product. So, I would say that you are taking an excessive dose of the plant substance. Red clover contains isoflavones diadzien, genistein, formononetin, and biochanin A. To know what proper dosing you are receiving from a product, that product needs to be standardized in order to deliver the exact dose. Unfortunately most herbs are not standardized and it is possible for varying batches to contain to much or too little of the phytoestrogens. To be on the safe side, it is best not to take phytoestrogens or plant estrogens for long periods of time, otherwise, more than a period of three months at a time. Red clover also contains substances which will increase the bleeding time, and this will make the blood thinner. So it is another reason not to take such high doses.

Debbie, the best plant for vaginal dryness is aloe vera. It works great. Get the book Prescription for nutritional Healing. I have been working out of this book for about fifteen years now for myself and my family.
