i have Nongonococcal Urethritis (NGU) and i had a pungent smell which irritated me and those around me - even with my washed clothes. i took active 10+ Manuka and it cured it. i know it sounds ridiculous - but it worked for me. a good diet of fruits did not solve the problem completely but taking 10+ Manuka helped. i think it killed the bacteria in me. i cannot explain how else my smell from the urine vanished. i have been taking a steady course of vitamin c and b but when i took this along - the smell disappeared. i would like to share this to help others. thanks. trying to help.

Dear Fiona, I had a grandmother who also had Psoriasis, she found one of the Benefits of Infra-Red Light and Infra-Red Saunas was it kept her skin breakouts greatly reduced. You might learn more about > Infrared Light. We also have more information on > Types of Psoriasis and Psoriasis Treatment Options. You may wish to read about them. Thanks for posting your question about Manuka Honey!

Dear Fiona, Psoriasis is a skin disorder which is considered to be an autoimmune disease. The body's own immune system recognizes its own cells as a foreign invader and begins to attack. It may be caused by genetic and or environmental factors. Some factors which worsen the condition include smoking, alcohol stress, skin infections or traumas, bug bites, sunburn, and chemical drugs and also medications. So, of course, you will want to avoid all of the above factors in order to prevent aggravating the psoriasis. Surprisingly, many people have found relief from applying Manuka honey directly onto their skin overnight, and covering the lesions. It appears that Manuka honey is different from most other honey and contains an unknown healing factor, along with an antibacterial effect. If you don't like applying the Manuka honey directly onto your skin, then I was able to locate a few cremes which contain the honey. Go here to compare the Manuka honey cremes> Active Manuka Honey Cream. This site is also a good resource> Eczema and Psoriasis creams. This is also an additional source> Hopes Relief Cream for psoriasis. You might also want to take a good quality Omega 3 supplement orally which has helped many psoriasis sufferers and has improved the quality of their skin. You can also try applying 100% Jojoba oil, and Calendula creme to the skin lesions, and even goldenseal oil mixed with the Manuka Honey and apply topically. Please feel free to share with us what works for you.

Can I take Manuka honey if I am allergic to penicillin? What do you mean by uncompensated allergies?

By Dr. Leia
2008-11-09 18:34:12

Dear Diya, Uncompensated allergies means that the body is unable to handle the toxin load of the allergen or object to which your body is allergic. For instance, if you have an allergy to bee stings, your body would not be able to tolerate a sting without going into an anaphylactic shock mode which could be potentially life-threatening and could include symptoms such as unconsciousness, difficulty breathing, shock, extensive swelling around the bee local sting area, and even swelling of the throat and airway passages, nausea, dizziness, and general weakness and malaise. Just a minute amount of venom from the bee sting could cause this incredible reaction in the body. So, it is not recommended that people sensitive to bee stings take any type of bee products including bee pollen, royal jelly, and honey. If you have a penicillin allergy, you may not necessarily have an allergy to bees and bee products. However, before taking any substance orally, first please check with your health care adviser.

My body is prone to getting bladder infections and I also have had a sinus infection for about six months. Someone suggested taking a teaspoon of Manuka Honey 10+ on a daily basis. Would this help?

By Dr. Leia
2008-12-26 12:57:35

Dear Sarah, Bladder infections or urinary tract infections can be serious and should be monitored with regular urine cultures by your medical doctor or naturopathic doctor. Chronic infections usually mean that your immune system is not functioning properly or that there may be another cause for them to recur. Usually women who use a diaphragm are susceptible to bladder infections. Also any type of vaginal irritation, irregular sexual contact with your partner, synthetic underwear, or using strong scented chemical laundry detergent or clothing softeners can cause irritation of the urethra. These are just a few of the causes for chronic urinary infections. Other causes can include food allergies, eating too much sugar, having diabetes, or wearing tight jeans. Manuka honey is an effective topical anti-bacterial which can help to clear up topical skin infections, however, when taken orally, it may help to bolster the immune system. It may not help your situation it depends upon the cause. Just be aware that too much sugar in any form can contribute to the growth and feeding of bacteria, and since the honey has to travel through your gastrointestinal tract, it may be decomposed and not reach the bladder in the form in which it was ingested. Please let us know how it works for you. Good luck.

Why can't a person with a cardiovascular condition consume active Manuka Honey? This is stated above and yet I cannot find an answer as to why.

2009-10-15 20:07:17

Hi Suzanne, it is not advised to use Manuka Honey if you have cardiovascular disease as some people may have a reaction to the bee pollen that may be in a product which could then cause an allergic reaction which would put stress on the heart.

Hi, I have been reading about the benefits of Manuka honey and it is impressive. I am 27 weeks pregnant, so I am thinking that I might purchase a jar in the event that I get a sore throat, or for the inevitable heat burn that may come in the following weeks. Are there any benefits from taking Manuka to prevent colds or flu. Yes, I'm thinking swine flu. I have read that users are buying Manuka UMF 10+ or 5+. What should I do? I am expecting.

Hi Johanna, I would ask the manufacturer of the Manuka Honey you wanted to buy what their processing protocol was and check with them directly to have all my concerns addressed before I took anything while I was expecting.

I discovered Manuka Honey by chance about five years ago when I developed a serious sinus infection. I believe now, after many years, it was being caused by a deviated septum. I started by taking antibiotics, which worked, but the side affects were a hindrance and I knew I could not take it for long. I started using colloidal silver, which worked very well. Again, one of the side effects was that silver sediments could be trapped under the skin and cause your skin to go blue. So, discovering Manuka Honey was a real blessing. At the time I also had IBS, again doctors know of no cure and doctors couldn't figure out why I was getting chronic sinus infections. Manuka Honey was my bread and butter, I was using UMF 10. I started with two teaspoons a day for a month and then over to one a day, for about five years. I tried throughout the five year period to stop taking it but days after stopping, the infections surfaced again. I also noticed after a short while that my IBS had cleared. Anyway, I recently stopped taking the Manuka Honey and my sinus infections have gone totally. It's not cheap but you can't put a price on your health. I believe the NHS, in the UK, should recognize Manuka Honey.

Hi Anna, I have acne necrotica and have tried steroid and antihistamine creams from my dermatologist but they didn't have much effect. I have been using manuka honey as a face mask every day for about six weeks for half an hour each time and also use the manuka oil. I am exceptionally pleased with the results as is my dermatologist who has signed me off and is happy for me to use the manuka. It has even improved the actual condition of my skin so much so that people noticed an improvement very quickly. I love the stuff.

I have acne necrotica around my chin, forehead and back and also suffer from IBS. After running out of options for medications, my pediatrician said Manuka honey may help with both. I don't really understand which UMF to use or whether active or non active would make a difference? which one and what UMF would have the best results? Thank-you.

Hi Elle, I use a UMF of 15. This seems to work really well. I put it on for half and hour to hour at night and then wash it off. Before I go to bed I wash with Manuka honey soap and then put Manuka oil on. I find it has worked great for me.

I have recurrent sinusitis and respiratory infections. I do not smoke and live in New Zealand. How much Manuka honey, 15+ UMF would I need to ingest daily to help control my recurrent infections? Cheers.

I have Fibromyalgia, and with this I get every virus and infection going around. I get chest infections as well and mouth infections. I take a lot of antibiotics and my doctor said eventually they will stop working, and I am worried about what will work instead of this. I have heard of colloidal silver. Would this help, or Manuka Honey? Would that be better for me? I have also put on weight with this condition, so I don't want to put on anymore. Would the honey do this? If I do buy the honey what strength would I need, and how often would i take it for? I have had a virus which was going around and most people only had it for a few days, then a week later I got an inner infection so more tablets and that lasted two weeks. I live in the UK, so I need to know where is the best place to get the honey or silver from, or can I take both? Any advice would be very welcome, thanks.

I am a 32 year old female who has basically had acne my entire life. I have tried everything over the counter, as well as many prescribed treatments, such as oral anitbitocs. All of which have not worked. I've recently decided to take a more "natural" approach to clearing the acne and bought a manuka honey cleansing system, cleanser, toner, and moisturizer. I haven't noticed my acne getting any better, if anything it's gotten worse. I was wanting to also try either a topical, "active" manuka honey product or an oral one. Does anyone have any advice on which one I should try?
