Detoxification of the Liver and Gallbladder - Learn a Procedure for Doing a Liver and Gallbladder Flush

Your body needs support and preparation to maintain health, just as you prepare your food before you eat it.

If you visit a physician or doctor who prescribes supplements and herbs he or she should also make sure you are capable of absorbing, transporting and utilizing these substances fully and correctly.

Any good natural medicine practitioners will always start with a good body cleansing, before prescribing supplementation. Remember this important tip when you choose your doctor or physician. If you don't you may find, like so many others, you won't receive the desired results you are seeking.

Cellular cleansing and body detoxification starts with a liver, gallbladder and intestinal cleanse. The following is a brief summary of the cleanse recommended in "The Amazing Liver and Gallbladder Flush" by Andreas Moritz. Before attempting the liver cleanse you will want to purchase and read this book, because there is much more information you will need to know to have a successful liver and gallbladder flush.

Here is a brief summary of the actual liver cleanse that is very direct:

Purchase enough apple juice (best is freshly pressed organic) to drink 24 ounces a day for six consecutive days. You may also sip on the apple juice throughout the day full strength or cut in half with water.

You will also need to purchase:

  • Epsom Salts
  • A Couple of Grapefruits
  • Olive oil - Extra Virgin high quality - cold pressed organic

Protocol for the Liver/Gallbladder Flush:

Step One: You are going to drink 24 ounces of apple juice for six consecutive days. The malic acid in the apple juice softens the liver and gallstones. During this time you will also avoid eating protein rich foods, sugar, and alcohol along with drinking cold beverages (you do not want to chill the liver).

Step Two: On the fifth day schedule a colonic. This is very important to clear your colon otherwise stones may not pass on the following day when you actually do the cleanse. (The book also gives additional recommendations this is why it is important to read the book before doing this cleanse.)

Step Three: On the sixth day of drinking apple juice you want to have a very light breakfast. At 2 p.m. you are going to have a light lunch and on this day you will finish your apple juice early. (the book gives you a description of what you should eat on this day). Then around 4 pm if you feel you still need to cleanse your colon again, you can do an enema. At 5 pm you mix two separate concoctions. One is a mixture of four tablespoons of of Epsom Salts and 24 ounces of water. This is divided into 4 servings. You also juice the grapefruit so you have it on hand.

Step Four: At 6 pm, you drink one serving of the Epson Salt mixture, then again another serving at 8 pm. The mixture tastes pretty bitter, so you can rinse your mouth with a little water. This mixture dilates your bile ducts and prepares you for the olive oil and grapefruit juice mixture.

Step Five: At 10 pm mix equal parts olive oil with grapefruit juice (4 oz of each) Next, go stand by your bed, drink the olive oil and grapefruit mixture, and immediately lay down on your bed with your head elevated. For 20 minutes lay absolutely still with your eyes closed. (you will begin to feel the stones releasing and rolling across your liver). After the 20 minutes you may decide to fall asleep. But set the alarm for 6 am in the morning. You may feel a bit nauseous during your sleep time. This happens when your body releases toxin which have been stored in both the gallbladder and liver. Don't worry, this is actually normal and signals the procedure is working. If you feel the need to vomit, do so, as this is a normal release of toxins. For those who don't feel nauseous, don't worry, you just may not have had as many stored toxins.

4. On day 7 upon arising at 6 am drink the third mixture of epson salts, then the last serving at 8 am. You will most likely find yourself in the bathroom by now, and if not usually by 10 am. Your first elimination will be the meal you ate from the previous day. Next you will eliminate mostly liquid, along with many, many liver and often gallstones.

Time to celebrate since you have cleansed your liver and gallbladder of stones and toxins. You will also see additional stones for the next couple of days of bowel movements. It is also very important to follow up your cleanse with another colonic or enema to ensure stones don't remain in your system.

The liver/gallbladder flush should be repeated 1x monthly for the first 3 months, and it may take up to twelve cleanses before you are stone free. Also, a teaspoon of Olive Oil a day will keep the bile ducts clean and prevent new stones from forming.

Please remember this is only a brief summary of the cleanse, there is much more you should know before trying this on your own. We highly recommend you read Moritz's book.

Can I change the hours I take the Epsom salts and olive oil mixture in by up to 2 hours? In other words, can I take the Epsom salts at 8 and 10pm and then the oil mixture at midnight? Thank you.

Not really a good idea. I do this cleanse all of the time and I follow it exactly. I also get more stones out if I do the colonic early morning and then don't eat the whole day before doing the cleanse. Also, be very careful about what you eat for the whole next day. Stay light. Don't eat very much at all. Then gradually increase your quantity of food to the normal amounts. Finally, it's very important to do a second colonic a day or two later. Here's my schedule: Saturday morning colonic, Saturday night cleanse, Sunday morning cleanse. I often do acupuncture later on Sunday, as well. Monday morning colonic. This schedule has been very effective for me. I love this cleanse.

I cannot tolerate apple juice. Is there a substitution for that?

Apple juice works best for many reasons you learn about in the book. One reason is the malic acid in apple juice that softens the stones. You can try cranberry juice as it also contains malic acid and the book offers additional herbs you can take instead that will be effective.

I am thinking about doing the cleanse, but am concerned about getting a stone caught in a duct. An ultrasound test revealed that I have two stones that show up on the test. One is 1/2 cm and the other is 1 1/2 cm in size. This test was taken about two or more months ago, so the stones may have grown since then. Is there a size beyond which you would not recommend the cleanse?

Dear Shola F., Liver flush recipes abound in a myriad of different forms and have been around for many years and tried by thousands of people. The above recipe is only one of many unique variations. Personally, I do not recommend the liver flushes to any of my patients. Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate and contains about 3.4 grams of magnesium per one teaspoon. This alone is a hefty dose compared to the amount of recommendation of magnesium which is about .5 to 1.0 grams per day. The above recipe indicates to take 4 tablespoons, or 13.6 grams, which is extremely excessive. Such high doses of magnesium are dangerous and even fatal to people who have kidney problems or decreased kidney function and to small children. Deaths have even been due to overdosing on magnesium, especially through enemas or colonics. Many controversies exist about whether the contents expelled after a liver flush are indeed even gall stones. Because of the nature of the liver flush ingredients, the so-called "stones" could be soft complexes of mineral produced in the digestive tract overnight from the mix of grapefruit or lemon juice and olive oil. If indeed one does have gall stones, the large amount of oil can cause contraction of the gall bladder, which causes narrowing of the orifice of the gall bladder, thus trapping the gall stones. Surgery would then be required to remove them. Usually, the symptoms of nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping and bloating associated with this flush is more than likely caused by the large amounts of magnesium and olive oil, and not a detoxification reaction as would a liver flush aficionado promulgate. Bottom line:I do not recommend a liver flush for anyone. You could visit your local Naturopathic doctor who would then guide you in slowly dissolving the stones over a longer period of time through using state of the art nutraceuticals, rather than through a drastic overnight flushing. It is beyond the scope of this media to guide you in an individual method to dissolve or shrink the stones. I hope this information helps you to use discernment when using drastic self-doses methods of healing, regardless of how long the information has been available.

Just finishing my second gall bladder cleanse today. Much easier this time to get the concoctions down, also have more overall energy than last months cleanse. I guess there are two reasons: last month I was worried about the impending surgery for a two c.m. gall stone, and I was not feeling well. That time I passed many, many "stones", five of which were the size of quarters. I also did not rest enough following cleanse that time I felt drained for a few days. Since then I have felt way more energetic. This time there were many fewer stones and I feel a little tired but not as drained. No big ones this time but I am glad all that junk is out of me. Will do it again monthly till no more stones come out. If that happens it will completely debunk the argument that what is being passed is stuff formed by the olive oil and grapefruit juice. I, however, need no more convincing because ever since the first cleanse I have had no more symptoms. I even tested it by eating eggplant parmigiana and cheesecake. I know A. Moritz would not approve but I had to know.

Dear Shola F, after 13 years of the contraceptive pill and two rounds of Roaccutane drug for acne, I was keen to do Andreas Moritz's liver flush. I was quite horrified and intrigued at the amount of stones I (painlessly) passed on my first flush last month. The largest was 1.8 inches long and 0.5 inches high, and I felt no pain (just felt like small bowel movement). I no longer suffer from a 'foggy head', my reading is better, candida cleared and my skin is showing improvement. I plan to do my 2nd flush next month, and will again stick rigidly to Andreas Moritz instructions in his book. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Hi, I have Autoimmune Hepatitis and Grave's Disease, and I just found out that I need surgery to remove my gallbladder. I don't have stones yet, what I have is what may form the stones, but the reason I got checked is because I've been having pain under my ribs that I thought was my liver. My question is, can I still do a liver and gallbladder flush even if I have these problems?

Hi Marlene, Dr. Leia would suggest that you check with your doctor fist and look into the cleanse and diet she recommends at the end of the above article. You could print out the page and take it into your doctor.

Hi, regarding liver flush that grapefruit juice mix with olive oil, is it alright to replace grapefruit juice with black rice vinegar since both of them taste sour. Thank you.

Two part question, for women is it alright to do the cleanse during menstruation, and is it acceptable to drink the malic acid solution for an extra day, making the cleanse an eight day process instead of seven?

The malic acid is in the apple juice, you can drink it every day of your life, every time you eat an apple you get it, it is nature's gift to you free!

How important is it to do the two morning Epsom salt drinks on the last day? I had severe diarrhea the night before taking the olive oil and juice mix and don't want to spend the whole day near the toilet today.

I am a 46 yr. old male in great shape. Since my 'attack' in march '10 from a 1.6cm stone, I have completely changed my diet. I no longer eat processed foods and fats, soda, sugar, diet drinks, coffee, caffeine, teas, etc. I eat more living foods such as raw vegetables, and I consume more than 1/2 gallon of water daily. I stopped red meats and pork switching to fish and organic foods. I also take powerful Chinese herbs to help shrink the stone. I do not dare deviate from my diet and have since had only minor discomfort a few times. I also take ACV with apple juice. Due to the size of my stone, I am heeding advice such as that given by Dr. Leia and other medical and natural healing professionals, thereby avoiding the 7 day liver gallbladder cleanse. Available literature dictates my stone cannot be easily shrunk, nor can it pass through my biliary duct at its current size. I have read about unfortunate persons trying to pass a large stone who end up in the ER at 3am for a cholecystectomy. I temper my diet weekly with a coffee enema fortified with vitamins and probiotics. The enemas are incredible for reducing my arthritis and improving my vision and mood. My skin is also improving. My stone did not appear overnight, and I fear it will take a long time to shrink safely. I am becoming more of a vegan and I feel much better without all the chemicals in my diet. I did pass three kidney stones safely and without pain. My HR and HR are both lower and my blood is very healthy. With cautious optimism, I will continue this diet and if my ultrasound shows promise (smaller stone), I will try a flush in the future.
