Gall Bladder Diet & Gentle Approach to Liver and Gallbladder Cleanse a Better Choice

Question for Dr. Leia: My gall bladder symptoms lead me to be recently diagnosed with Gall bladder stones and of course my doctor recommended I get surgery to take my gall bladder out. I am thinking about doing a gall bladder flush. What do you recommend?

Dr. Leia's Answer: There are many versions of the "Gall Bladder Flush" floating around, which purportedly are supposed to flush the stones from the gall bladder. These flushes are also referred to as a "Liver Flush".

Many of these flushes are harsh and extreme, using large amounts (one cup or more) of olive oil, combined with Epsom salts, and vinegar or lemon juice, and apple juice. As you can see it may be difficult to consume this large amount of oil at one sitting, and may cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Another controversy about using these gall bladder flushes is whether the globules which are excreted are really dissolved gall stones or just a chemical reaction as the result of the mixture of the ingredients used. If the globules float on top and do not sink to the bottom of the toilet, then these would not be true gall stones, which are extremely hard substances. They would not just be able to be "squashed" or gel-like.

A major prerequisite before even thinking about trying one of these gall bladder flushes would be to determine the size of your gall stones. If the stones are of a large diameter, which indicates that they have been forming in the gall bladder for a long time, there is a great danger of the stones becoming stuck in the small bile duct as it tries to pass out of the gall bladder and into the smaller duct.

This is a serious problem and can even be life threatening if the gall stones become stuck in the duct. So before even considering to attempt one of these flushes, it is important to have an ultrasound done on the gall bladder to determine the size of the stones. If the stones are large, then they will not be able to pass through the duct. If the stones are small (your doctor will be able to advise you), then I would recommend that you use one of the more gentler versions of the gall bladder flushes, rather than one of the more extreme versions.

For larger stones, you could visit your Naturopathic doctor who could assist you in helping to slowly and gently decrease the size of these stones using a regimented daily supplementation of nutraceuticals. Also, you might want to visit your acupuncturist or Chinese herbalist who will give you a traditional eastern herbal formula to help with your gall stones. Thereafter, in order to prevent the formation of further gall stones, you should follow a regimented diet modification protocol.

The gall bladder does have an important function, so it's removal should be considered only as a last resort. It is a hollow organ which stores bile and bile acids which are important in the emulsification, digestion, and the breakdown of fats and oils.

Gall Bladder Diet

A gallbladder diet should eliminate high fat diet, stress, spicy food, refined carbohydrates, alcohol, caffeine, and high amounts of animal and dairy products which can all contribute to the formation of gall bladder stones.

Eliminating or reducing these foods in your diet may help your gall bladder problems, along with eating large portions of fresh vegetables, a low fat high fiber diet, with only whole grains and good fats are essential to preventing the recurrence of gall stones.

I have been on 100 percent raw foods for two weeks, and I have done several enemas and every time I see what appears to be soft green and black stones. I have not done a gall bladder flush by drinking apple juice, olive oil, Epsom salt etc. Can you explain if it is normal to be passing stones after doing the raw food diet?

Dear Donna, There have been reports of people passing gall bladder stones after following a raw foods diet. I am not an expert on this subject, but here are two links which may help to explain more about a raw foods diet, its implications upon your health, and other information. Many experts believe that a completely raw foods diet should not be followed strictly for long periods of time, but rather for short periods. It appears to have many positive health benefits, including detoxification if done properly, and if enough protein is ingested with the diet. I hope these following links help > How to do the raw food diet. Also the following link > Raw foods are healthful.
