Stop the Aging Clock: HGH - Human Growth Hormone Therapy, and Research Points Out Dangers

Question for Dr. Leia: I am very curious about HGH, human growth hormone therapy. As I understand it, it is best to take a homeopathic remedy that supports your body in creating its own HGH. But can you tell me more about human growth hormone research and the effects and dangers of taking HGH supplements, other than homeopathics. Thank you, Shelby

Dr. Leia's Answer: Dear Shelby, hGH or human growth hormone, also called somatotropin, is an endocrine hormone secreted by the pituitary gland. There has been a lot of interest in hGH lately, some touting it as the anti-aging hormone which will promote longevity, and even turn back the clock to make a person young again.

What is HGH?

It is probably one of the most widely researched hormones in mankind's eternal quest and search for the fountain of youth. hGH is secreted at its peak during adolescence and is responsible for the physical growth of the body during this period. By the age of 60, hGH is still secreted by the pituitary gland but decreased by a factor of 25% less than when a person is 15 to 20 years old. Nature is wise, and the reason that hGH is produced in youth is to assist in the proper growth of the skeleton, to strengthen bone structure as it grows, and to assist in the rapid growth of the organism.

The actions of human growth hormone are very broad and far reaching upon all aspects of the human organism. Some of the positive effects of hGH include:

  • cholesterol
  • memory
  • vision
  • immune function improvements
  • hair color and muscle mass restoration
  • cardiac output
  • sexual function
  • energy increases
  • skin and hair thickening
  • wrinkle reduction
  • body fat reduction
  • sleep and mood improvement

However, because human growth hormone is such a large molecule, it cannot be taken and absorbed orally, but must be given via injections in order to have any of the above effects upon the body. It is an unstable molecule and extremely expensive to manufacture and to isolate, not to mention the many dangerous side effects when given by injection.

Human Growth Hormone Danger

Here are a list of a few of the possible side effects of hGH injections:

  • allergic response
  • massive bleeding
  • edema or swelling
  • blood sugar problems
  • either too high or too low
  • gastrointestinal problems
  • cancer
  • heart problems
  • extremely low blood pressure

So, you can see why human growth hormone injections are not being used by every doctor and patient to increase longevity and as an anti-aging panacea. The side effects are greater than the benefits.

Human Growth Hormone Research

Therefore, ongoing research is being made into other ways to increase the hGH levels more naturally, and to assist the body to enhance or increase its own production naturally, rather than by direct supplementation.

Because human hGH is a hormone produced by the master endocrine gland, the pituitary gland, it interacts with all of the other hormones produced by the body including: estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and the thyroid hormones. To have one hormone out of balance is to cause an imbalance in one or all of the other hormones.

Testing and naturally supplementing the levels of these other hormones is also beneficial for insuring the optimal production of human growth hormone. A healthy diet, consisting of whole grains, low glycemic index foods, and an exercise program of at least 4 times per week is imperative for the healthy function of the body and balancing of all the hormones, including hGH. Homeopathic remedies, along with a proper diet and exercise program, may provide a safe natural alternative to injectable hormones.

I hope this helps to sort out the fact from the fiction behind this so-called miracle panacea medicine and remedy. If the claims are unbelievable, more often than not, the product will not live up to the claims, and beware of the side effects of such products.

Use common sense, logic, and science when seeking a miracle drug.

I took Human Growth Hormone from Rejuvenate 2000 last summer. I'm not sure if this is a side effect, but shortly after taking it I started spotting mid month. This has been happening for about four months. I've stopped taking the HGH, but the spotting continues. Any information would be helpful. Thanks, Cindy

Dear Cindy, I do not endorse the product you mentioned, Rejuvenate 2000. I looked on their website and viewed their ingredients, which look harmless enough. A good internet product will be forthcoming and openly list the ingredients. Since I am unfamiliar with this product, I do not know how to advise you about it's effectiveness and it's effects upon the body. What I do know, however, is that vaginal spotting or breakthrough bleeding could signal an imbalance in your hormones, including your female hormones and thyroid hormones, a menopausal symptom, or another more serious problem involving growths or lesions in the uterus or lining of the uterus. I recommend that you visit your gynecologist and have complete work-up and testing for your spotting. Spotting between periods or menses is not typical and the cause should be immediately checked out. Highly recommended tests could include a PAP smear test, hormonal blood testing, a pelvic ultrasound or sonogram, and possibly an endometrial PAP smear. Please do not delay. Visit your gynecologist today.

I used a course of HGH for a period of 8 weeks. Injecting it into the fat of my stomach 2 IU per day. I am 23 years old and have no existing health conditions other than severe anxiety disorder, it was about 12 months ago that I did this and I now deeply regret it as I am paranoid that I am at risk of developing a serious illness. I have also been suffering from stress, which has caused elevation in my blood pressure as well as stress symptoms like headaches etc, can you tell me if I have put my self at risk now for any illness? I am terribly desperate and need to put this behind me as it is affecting my whole life. Thank You Joseph Davies

Dear Keven, Human Growth Hormone supplementation is not recommended for anyone under 30 years of age. If you suspect a growth hormone problem at your age, you should visit your doctor for a complete work-up including a blood test for IGF-1 also called Human Growth-Like Hormone or Somatotropin.

Dear Joseph D, I am sure that the doctor who performed your injections would have been honest with you and let you know if there was any harm in your procedures which you had done. If you have any concerns about your current physical state of health, you should visit your medical doctor and get regular annual check-ups and testing. It sounds as if you could also talk to a counsellor about your severe anxiety disorder, get it under control, and learn ways to decrease the stress in your life. Stress can lead to worse disease then your injections, so it is important to find out how to control it. Since the past is done, it is pointless to worry about it. You can take control of your life now by taking care of your body, mind, and spirit. Good luck in finding the balance in your life.
