Solutions for Skin Irritations: Skin Tag Removal, Drawing Salves, and Organic Aloe Creams

What are Skin Tags?

The technical term for skin tags is acrochordon, or cateneous papilloma. These are fleshy-colored growths which form into a tag of skin that extends from the body. Most often they are found where there are folds in the skin. Areas such as the sides of the neck, armpits, and areas around the groin. They also can form around eye lids and around the eye area.

Although there has never been consensus on what causes skin tags it is suspected that they could come from a variety of factors such as irritation from the skin areas rubbing together, Human papilloma Virus, and also a resistance to insulin.

Skin tags are quite common and form in both men and women most often during middle age. They can vary in size and color ranging very small to up to 5 mm in size. Although skin tags are benign they can be irritating and it is quite easy to remove skin tags with essential oils.

Help for Arm Pit Rash Symptoms

Question for Dr. Leia: I have an arm pit rash starting to form and it is starting to spread. Could you recommend a cream for rashes or any other natural treatment for skin irritation? It is not really an itchy skin rash just irritating.

Dr. Leia's Answer: Underarm or auxiliary rashes can have many different causes. You didn't mention whether you shave under your arms or not, but if you do, shaving can cause an irritation or rash, especially if you cut or nick your skin with the shaver or razor.

Also, hairs can become ingrown or cause folliculitis and can become infected and cause a rash or irritation or bumps. Other simple causes could be a heat rash especially during the summer months, fungal infection, bacterial infection, seborrheic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, allergies, cradle cap, eczema, psoriasis, scabies, chickenpox, measles, or dry skin due to vitamin A deficiency.

Because the underarm or armpit contains lymph nodes and if the rash is persist ant or if there is swelling, a lump, a bruise, pus or purulent lesion present, then it could mean that there is a more serious underlying problem or cause which should pursued more carefully. Some more serious problems could include, but are not limited to: syphilis, HIV, breast cancer, lymphoma, melanoma, or bacterial meningitis.

It is advisable to wash your armpits with a mild non-irritating soap and warm water both in the morning and at night. Make sure that you dry the area well, being careful not to scratch or irritate the delicate skin. Eliminate any antiperspirant which may contain harsh chemicals, perfumes, alcohol, additives, or allergens.

Also, check to see if your laundry detergent is causing skin irritation, and change brands to a non-toxic one. Avoid the use of heavy greasy petrolatum based creams which may prevent the area from healing and try a gentle calendula, aloe vera, or homeopathic creme that is non-greasy. A lighter gel-type creme might be preferable.

If the rash persists for greater than a few days, then visit your doctor to get an accurate diagnosis and testing.

Drawing Out Skin Infections

Question for Dr. Leia: something is in my thumb I try with needle to get it come out but nothing whole thumb is swollen and hurts. Any solutions of what to do? Thanks

Dr. Leia's Answer: I see that almost one month has passed since you wrote about your thumb problem. If you have pain and swelling that does not go away in a short period of time, you should visit your doctor and have him/her check it out. You could have an infection which is deep under the skin, sometimes caused by anaerobic bacteria which do not need oxygen to live, but grow deep inside the tissues.

Normally, it is not wise to pick and prod at an infected skin problem because it could just irritate it and make it worse. If there is a possibility of a foreign object imbedded under the skin, usually applying a cold ice compress alternating with a warm compress to the area might draw it out.

There is a product called Prid salve which is an all natural homeopathic salve which may be helpful for drawing out foreign objects from the skin. If this does not do the trick, then it is unwise to use a needle when there is no visible sign of a foreign object.
