In 2007 and 2008 Cuba did a major research study on the effects of homeopathics with over 2.5 million participants.
Leptospirosis is a disease that annually costs the government about 2 million a year, and the country suffers from thousands of infections and a number of fatalities.
Using homeoprophylaxis—the equivalent of vaccinations in homeopathy—a nosode of Leptospirosis was prepared and administered along with two Bach Flower Essences to address the typical mental and emotional effects of the disease. Surprisingly, this brought the incidence of infection to just under 10 people with no fatalities. The homeopathic solution cost just 10% of that at US $200,000.
In many medical communities the vote is still out on whether or not homeopathic remedies are effective alternatives to prescription drugs, and some seek more facts and data from Cuba’s homeopathic study.
We certainly hope that more studies are documented to provide factual evidence that the energetic signature held within a remedy can be as effective (without side effects) as the substance itself.
Safety of Homeopathics
Question for Dr. Leia: I need clarification please. I know that homeopathic remedies are fairly safe. However, can a person have a reaction (allergic) to a remedy?
What about negative interactions between the remedy and a prescription drug?
Dr. Leia’s Answer: Before answering your question I would like to provide a simple explanation on how homeopathic remedies are made.
Creating a Homeopathic Remedy
A homeopathic tincture is a dilution of a substance past the Avogadro’s Number, which, mathematically, means that they are diluted so much that the actual physical substance—either plant, animal, or mineral—is no longer present in the remedy if a spectrophotometric reading is done.
The higher the number, the higher the dilution, which in turn makes the homeopathic remedy more powerful or potent.
Depending upon whether the homeopathic practitioner prescribes the correct remedy, this will determine the effect upon the disorder which the patient presents.
Homeopathic Remedy Side Effects
If the practitioner prescribes the incorrect remedy, then the homeopathic medicine will have no effect at all, or, if the patient is extremely sensitive to this wrong remedy, then the patient could “prove” the remedy.
This gets a bit complicated to explain, but what a “proving” means is that the patient will manifest the same symptoms which are the keynotes of that particular remedy.
Homeopathy is based upon “like cures like,” which means that the frequency of the effective homeopathic will match the frequency of the disease or symptoms.
In addition to no effect or a “proving,” the patient could also have a detoxifying reaction, which can occur especially to nosodes.
Detoxifying Reactions to Homeopathics
In the case of a detoxifying reaction to nosodes, the remedy could manifest as:
- skin lesions
- muscle and body aches and pains
- edema
- erythema, etc.
However, once the detoxifying symptoms disappear, then the patient will be cured of the original presenting problem.
Homeopathic Antedotes
Homeopathic remedies can usually and easily be antedoted by giving the patient a small amount of:
- coffee
- strong tea
- peppermint
- other strong smelling substances.
Substances like the above will inactivate the effects of the homeopathic.
Children and animals respond wonderfully to homeopathic remedies and some adults appear to not respond at all.
Mixing Homeopathics and Prescription Drugs
As far as prescription drugs go, homeopathic remedies would most likely be antedoted or rendered useless in their presence, but this is not always so.
So, it is best to let your health care provider know all supplements and prescription drugs and medications you are currently taking prior to adding a homeopathic remedy to ensure you are taking what is optimal for your condition and for the homeopathic to be effective.
Sometimes homeopathic products can help to ease the side effects of some given medications. Usually, there is not competition between the two.
