Part Three: Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Series - Principles of Yin and Yang
All things have two aspects: a Yin aspect and a Yang aspect.
They are opposites but complementary opposites. One cannot exist without the other. This explains the creation of the physical world
Any Yin or Yang aspect can also be divided further into Yin and Yang. For example, the temperature...it can also be divided. For instance, the degree of hot and cold. And againg, cold can be further divided! You can easily divide into icy cold and moderately cold, etc.
Yin and Yang also depend upon each other for definition so they mutually create each other. For instance, you cannot speak of the height of something without making a distinction of short or tall because both are needed.
Yin and Yang also have control of each other. If Yin is in excessive, then Yang will be weakness. If it is very cold, then won't be enough heat.
Yin and Yang transform into each other. These changes occur harmoniously in the normal course of events, and also occur suddenly as in an extremely inharmonious fashion. Yin and Yang are always subtly transforming into each other. This constant transformation is the source of all change. It is a give-and-take relationship.
Because of this pervasive influence of Yin and Yang theory on Chinese thought and culture, the Chinese understand and explain events differently than does the West. The idea of causation, central to Western thinking, is almost entirely absent. For the Chinese, phenomena occur independently of an external act of creation, and there is no great need to search for a cause.
