Dear Ken, Hormone treatment for prostate cancer involves using drugs which lower the testosterone levels in the body. The lowering of testosterone results in side effects such as hot flushes, decreased libido, difficulty obtaining an erection, and breast tenderness. Hormone therapy does not actually treat the cancer, but makes it difficult for the cancer cells to grow, and is being utilized more and more. Sometimes, the cancer cells will adapt to this low testosterone environment and will continue to prosper. However, as you have experienced, hormone therapy is not without serious side effects. Go here to learn more about the side effects: > Cancer/Organization.You may want to talk to your doctor about intermittent hormone therapy where you receive hormone therapy until your PSA levels are stabilized at a lower level and then give your body a rest so as to return to its natural levels and function. However, your situation may not warrant this type of intermittent treatment and only your doctor can advise you. You could also ask your doctor about giving you the hormone progesterone, which may help to lessen or stop the hot flushes. I am not certain if the male body will respond to other natural therapies which we use for menopausal women, because a man's hot flushes are due to a response from the decrease in testosterone, and not a decrease in estrogen levels such as a menopausal woman would experience. The problem lies within the brain center, where the natural level of hormones have receptor sites on the cells, thus affecting the thermostat center of the body in the brain. Studies have shown that drinking one eight ounce glass of pomegranate juice daily for two years has helped a small study of men to prevent and to keep the prostate cancer cells from growing. So, since this is a harmless and tasty remedy, it might we well worth the habit of adopting. Be careful of the sugar content, though, and try to obtain unsweetened or low sugar pomegranate juice. Another herb which is used for enlarged prostates is Saw Palmetto. It is not a treatment for prostate cancer and hot flushes, but may be something which you might like to experiment with taking daily. There is speculation that our toxic environment may contribute to the increases in incidence of different cancers, so it might be a good idea to get a hair mineral analysis to be checked out for toxic metals and to check the balance of nutrient minerals in the body. A very promising product for helping to bolster the immune system is a product called Orenda Immune. Go here to check out this product and to find out the ingredients and uses of this product: > Orenda/Information. Go here to learn more about an herb specific for prostate health: > Herbs/Prostate. I sincerely hope that this information will assist you in attaining better health and balance.
