Natural Approach to Hair Regrowth - Are You Thinking About Costly Propecia or Regain?

Do you have thinning hair?

Premature Hair Loss?

Male Pattern Baldness?

Then you will want to know about natural approaches to hair regrowth.

Would you like to find out about a cost-effective natural approach to re-growing your hair? Are you considering drugs like Propecia and Regain (Minoxidil)?

The Propecia cost is high and Minoxidil can be very expensive, because they need to be used forever. Just imagine if there was a cure for hereditary Hair Loss that you could make at home within 10 minutes with some plants and roots that probably grow in your own garden or that can be purchased at the supermarket for $1.00.

If you suffer from male pattern baldness, thinning hair, alopecia or premature hairloss of any kind, you will know how upsetting and depressing it can be.

Many hairloss sufferers try pharmaceutical drugs such as Regain (Rogain in the U.S.) and Propecia, or seek advice and treatment from "prestigious" hairloss clinics.

Whatever you have tried so far you will have found out by now that trying to regrow lost hair is hard work - often producing only marginal results. The moment you stop using the medication the hair that re-grew often rapidly disappears.

Male pattern baldness (alopecia androgenetica) afflicts 40% of all males and has defied all attempts by medical science to invent a consistent cure. Currently Proprecia is the most successful drug that is available by prescription, but it works only slowly and often not at all. The manufacturer recommends at least a two year program for optimum results.

Research has shown that male pattern baldness is partly caused by the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase acting on the hormone testosterone, changing it to a form (DiHydroTestosterone) that attacks the hair roots. This enzyme increases with age and is considered one of the aging "markers" in males. Yet many young men are prone to male pattern baldness, but you can also reduce this enzyme with a better diet and taking nutritional supplements.

Hair loss such as Alopecia or balding, baldness or thinning of hair has its psychological implications. When individuals experience hair loss or thinning hair it often effects self image. Scalp hair is considered the crowning glory of femininity for women and a potent symbol of masculinity and security in men.

Often Alopecia disappears as quickly as it came, but in other cases it lasts a lifetime when diet, poor nutrition, or the use of personal care products that contain toxic ingredients put stress on the hair follicles and our immune systems. This often promotes or advances hair loss.

Some Reasons for Hair Loss

What is Male Pattern Baldness? This hair loss pattern results in the hair receding, on a male, roughly in the shape of the letter "m." As the baldness continues, you begin to see a sort of horseshoe shape pattern of baldness. No hair in the middle back to the crown.

What Causes Male Pattern Baldness? Interestingly enough, according to Medline Plus, Male Pattern Baldness is passed from mother to child. A man can more accurately predict his chances of developing male pattern baldness by observing his mother's father than by looking at his own father.

Both men and women lose hair for similar reasons. Hair loss in men is often more dramatic, and follows a specific pattern of loss which has been termed "Male Pattern Baldness". This loss is caused by dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Factors for male hair loss include: heredity, hormones, and aging.

This may also apply to women but to a lesser degree. Women may experience loss of hair after menopause and 2-3 months after having a baby.

Other Factors Contributing to Hairloss include:

  • poor diet
  • poor circulation
  • acute illness
  • radiation
  • chemotherapy
  • high stress
  • thyroid imbalance
  • certain drugs
  • coming off the contraceptive pill
  • diabetes
  • high doses of vitamin A (more than 100,000 IU)
  • sudden weight loss
  • high fever
  • iron deficiency
  • ringworm
  • some fungal infections
  • chemicals and hair dyes
  • vitamin deficiencies
  • lack of proper nutrition

Hi, I want to ask what should I do to solve my hair loss problem. I have had it since high school. I am now 22 and married. I noticed that the hair loss stopped after my marriage and then came back. I have heard of Rogaine, and I started using it regularly for five months. I didn't see any great results. Should I continue to use it or try something else? I don't eat well and suffer from stress do these things contribute to the problem? I believe that they do.

Dear Amera, since your hair loss problem began in high school it could be related to several problems. During puberty, your whole endocrine glandular system begins to develop and mature. Alopecia or hair loss can be affected by the imbalance of your endocrine glands, including the female sex hormones, the adrenal glands, the thyroid gland, stress, exercise levels, and your daily nutrition. Puberty is a very delicate stage of development of the human body, and when there is not adequate nutrition available, or when stress is present, or excess athletic pursuits such as marathon trainings or extreme sports, these things can throw off the fine, delicate balance of your hormonal production and development. So, you might want to visit your naturopathic doctor to have your female hormones tested, your thyroid hormones, and your adrenal stress index tested to see if they are within the normal range. If no hormonal cause is detected for your hair loss, you might want to check with a nutritionist or natural doctor who can analyze your diet for optimal nutrition. Polycystic ovary disease is also another cause of hormonal imbalance, so you might want to be tested for this problem also. Learning how to cope with stress through daily relaxation techniques, yoga, tai chi, or meditation is imperative for general overall well-being. I would stop the Rogaine, since it isn't helping and instead, search for the cause of the problem. Rogaine is just a band aid, and does not address the cause. I would recommend using a more gentler series of shampoo products called Nioxin, which, however, still does not address the cause. Good luck in your endeavors.

Hi, Do you know if there are any studies for pregnant women, whose husbands use Rogain? And whether there is still the same level of concern for the baby?

Hi Sharon, Does your bottle contain Minoxidil? If it does please do not use it. Regain is known in the States as Rogaine. Rogaine is a FDA pregnancy category C medication. It is not known whether Rogaine will be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not use Rogaine without talking to your doctor, especially if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment. Minoxidil may affect a nursing baby. Only the two percent strength may be used by women, the five percent is for men only. It would be better to use a natural product.

Hi Dr. Leia, Is it true that Biotin is good for my hair and it will help prevent hair loss in some men? I heard that you can get biotin by eating brewer's yeast, brown rice, oatmeal or sun seeds. Is this true?

I have been taking a lot of vitamin A for a skin problem and my hair seems to be thinning and falling out. Can it be due to taking too much?

Dear Roger, Biotin is a B vitamin which has been used in many vitamin preparations for hair, nail, and skin health. Pantothenic acid or B5 is a competitor of Biotin and will interfere with its absorption. Biotin is an important vitamin but by itself may not be enough to prevent hair loss especially if there are other causes for hair loss, including genetics, endocrine problems, stress, poor diet etc, as listed in the article above and in my answer to Amera above. Foods highest in biotin include nuts, especially peanuts, filberts, almonds, liver, yeast, soy, eggs, and cashews. Oatmeal, brown rice, and sunflower seeds will contain some amount of the other B vitamins and Biotin, but not as much as the foods listed prior to these.

Dear Stephanie, Large amounts of Vitamin A has been linked to hair loss, and it appears that some people are more sensitive to Vitamin A than others. Since Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin, this vitamin will accumulate in the body, making it easier to reach toxic levels. Some years ago, the FDA ruled that Vitamin A supplements could only be produced in 10,000 IU capsules or less. Prior to this ruling, Vitamin A supplements were available in much higher doses. Do not confuse Beta Carotene with Vitamin A. Beta Carotene is a precursor to Vitamin A and is not as toxic, but may accumulate in the body by turning the hands and skin yellow. It has low toxicity.

Hi, I was using 5% Minoxidil for 8 months but have stopped due to the side effects. It's given me black rings around my eyes and there seems to be wrinkling there too. I'm not spraying it on my face of course but it seems to be affecting my skin really badly. Do you know why this could be?

Minoxidil gave me black rings around my eyes and wrinkles. It also enlarged my pores on my temples and cheeks.
