More Natural Sleep Aids and Destressors

Potions, teas, vitamins, drinks, massages and herbal baths are helpful in inducing a good nights sleep:

Aromatherapy and Calming Bath Herbs: Take a warm bath using essential oils, such as blends with Sandalwood, Ylang ylang, lavender, Rose, Jasmine, German and Roman chamomile.

One of my favorites is a combination of Sandalwood, Patchouli, Lavender, Orange, Ylang Ylang, Rosewood, and Tangerine.

Sleep Tinctures: Try a sleep remedy with Lemon Balm. This herb acts as a sedative which also has the effects of elevating moods acting as an antidepressant. It is also very relaxing when dealing with burn out, or when in stressful conditions. Lemon Balm helps with many other health conditions and also has antiviral properties.

Calming Herbal Teas: Herbal teas are beneficial for many different conditions and there are several excellent herbs that promote relaxation and can help you sleep at night. Try drinking herbal teas throughout the day, and in the evening. Choose from:

  • German Chamomile
  • Valerian
  • Passion Flower
  • Catnip
  • Cowslip
  • Lemon Balm

B Vitamins and Panthothenic Acid: Inositol is one of the B vitamins that is helpful in inducing sleep along with pantothenic acid. You can try them separately or even together.

Inositol and Pantothenic Acid

Natural Amino Acid: Most of us have heard that turkey contains tryptophan and so does milk. Milk also contains calcium. This may be why those great thanksgiving dinners work so well at making everyone sleepy! If you don't have a bottle of tryptophan handy try eating a turkey sandwich and a warm glass of milk an hour prior to bedtime and see if you don't sleep better.

Natural Home Remedy for Sleeplessness

You can easily make an effective home sleeping potion, too. Just follow these easy directions.

  1. Valerian Tincture: 1 tbsp
  2. Apple cider Vinegar: 1 1/2 tsp
  3. Honey: 3 tbsp
  4. Hot Milk

About a half hour prior to bedtime mix the Valerian, Cider Vinegar and Honey together with a small amount of hot milk, then add the rest and mix. If you are not ready to fall asleep in about an hour you can have another dose, but don't drink more than that or you may awaken in the middle of the night to use the restroom.

Foot Reflexology Treatment: This is another excellent way to sleep at night. You can have someone massage the soles of your feet prior to bed with mustard oil! A foot reflexology treatment can be quite relaxing and the mustard oil will help.

Noticed that homeopathy isn't included in the article above. I have a friend who swears by a homeopathic product called Sleep Aid from King Bio. I also used homeopathy on my daughter when she was having frequent nightmares. I don't feel comfortable using herbal products or essential oils on young children, but I'm wondering if homeopathy is an alternative that is completely safe.

I have fibromyalgia and have worked up a set of herbs/supplements that has helped me keep it in remission for years. When I was finally diagnosed (after 13 years of pain), my research led me to the conclusion that it was caused by a sleep disorder. So, I went looking for things that help make sleep good. In addition to valerian root, another good herb for helping sleep is ashwagandha. I add to that mix: 5-htp, melatonin, and St. Johns Wort. I just wish insurance companies would pay for natural remedies and not just prescription medications.

Dear Benj, I don't know much about your Sleep Aid product from King Bio, but homeopathy is definitely a safe, gentle, effective alternative to chemical drugs and even herbs. In fact homeopathy is considered even safer than herbs because it usually doesn't have any side effects as do drugs and herbs. Homeopathy is especially recommended for children and pets, who usually respond well and get excellent results whereas an adult might respond to the products. Homeopathy originated by a medical doctor called Samuel Hahnemann in Germany in the 1800's. He became disenchanted with the quality of medicine at that time, and started experimenting on himself with herbs and flowers from his garden. He would make dilutions of the plants and dilute them down to where there would be no noticeable trace of the plant substance in the finished dilution. So, in reality, homeopathy is a very dilute form of medicine, and the dilution is so small that it could not poison the patient. Dr. Samuel Hahnemann worked ceaselessly with his new-found remedies and categorized them, analyzing each remedy for effects on different parts of the body and different symptom patterns. His work lives on in our modern world and is carried out via homeopaths and naturopathic doctors who have studied the volumes of homeopathic texts which are currently available to us. Homeopathy is especially popular in Europe, particularly England and Germany, and also in India. Rest easily knowing that homeopathy is an excellent treatment of choice for children. A word of addendum when working with homeopathic medicines: When selecting a remedy use it according to directions, usually placing it under the tongue, or with small children, dilute it in a small amount of water. Give the remedy away from food, usually 15 minutes to 1/2 hour before a meal or wait at least one hour after eating. Food and strong tasting foods such as mint and coffee will antidote or invalidate the remedy and make it ineffective or less effective. If the problem gets worse or new symptoms appear, you might want to try another remedy. Have fun exploring with these remedies.

Hello, Cynthia. It sounds like you have made some great progress. I might add that acupuncture seems to help immensely with fibromyalgia. I am currently treating a few fibromyalgia patients, and they are getting significant relief from weekly acupuncture treatments. Also, the acupuncturist will diagnose the specific core cause of the problem using Chinese or Oriental five element techniques and be able to prescribe individual Eastern herbal mixtures or formulae which have been used for thousands of years to help with the imbalance or healing. Thus, if the causative problem is inadequate sleep patterns, this would be addressed two ways, via acupuncture and Chinese herbal formulae. Other causes of fibromyalgia to consider would be toxic metals or chemicals which are ubiquitous in our environment and life today. I hope this helps.
