Dr. Leia Addresses Most Common Causes of Headaches

Do you live in an area where a larger percentage of the population seems to be experiencing headache symptoms. If so we would like to hear from you. You may also benefit by reading Dr. Leia's answer to the following question.

Question for Dr. Leia: I am wanting to find natural remedies for headaches and would like to understand what may be the cause of reoccurring headaches so I may take steps to eliminate them from my life.

Dr. Leia's Answer: Thank you for your question and for taking the first step toward your optimal health and healing.

Headaches can have many different causes and there are many different types. Some causes of headaches are:

  • Musculo-skeletal problems including muscle tension and tightness.
  • Subluxations of the spine or a vertebrae impinging upon a nerve.
  • Hormonal imbalances, including thyroid, adrenal, and female hormones, such as estrogen and progesterone and testosterone imbalance.
  • Various types of stress such as family or work related.
  • Environmental Stresses.
  • Nervous system disorders.
  • Hypertension or blood pressure increases and decreases.
  • Circulatory problems.
  • Blood sugar imbalances, either too low or too high.
  • Food or other allergies or sensitivities.
  • Trauma to the body, head, and neck or spine.

These are just a few of the numerous causes which can contribute to headaches.

I would suggest that anyone who has frequent headaches visit their doctor, who will ask more specific questions about your recurring headaches and their possible causes such as what makes them worse, and what makes them better, and other questions to obtain more detailed information about them. He/She should do a thorough physical exam and laboratory tests, if you have not had a checkup in a long time so your doctor can find out the cause of your headaches.

Finding out the cause will determine the course of action which will help to alleviate this problem. Once you obtain the diagnosis (not all headaches are created equal), you will then have several choices in the therapy. Choosing the natural route using natural products, herbs, vitamins, supplementation, and acupuncture may be part of your choices depending upon the cause and type of the headaches.

At that point we can explore some natural remedies for headaches which will address your particular type.

My father is fifty five and has thrombus in his Splenic Vein behind his pancreas, and in the Superior Mesenteric vein. Due to stomach pain, he has not been able to eat normally for five months. The doctor maintains the blood rate between 2-3 with medicine. They claim this is the only way to remove them. Please guide or suggest any method in Ayurveda or any other therapy, so they will go away more quickly.

Dear Vijay, A thrombus or blood clot in the splenic vein of the pancreas and superior mesenteric artery is a serious disease. Because of our modern technological diagnostic tools we are able to diagnosis such events more readily. Causes of thrombosis can be linked to pancreatitis or inflammation of the pancreas, trauma to the region, pseudocysts, or malignancies. Hopefully, your doctor has diagnosed the cause, and is treating it with exact appropriate medications. The use of herbal medicines in this incidence is not warranted, and would interfere with the fine balance which the doctor is hoping to achieve. Another option of a splenectomy, or removal of the spleen, may have been ruled out or considered by your doctor. Please ask his doctor about this surgery to see if it is an option. I cannot recommend any other natural medications to speed up the process and doubt that there are any natural medicines which would be strong enough to stop the pain. Homeopathic medicines may be an option, so you could find a Homeopathic practitioner in you area. I highly recommend that you talk to his doctor about some type of pain management to see if he can prescribe something.
