Ripe Banana Facts Make the Calories Worth It

There is more going on in the humble banana than meets the eye.

Apart from the number of ripe banana calories, there are a huge number of banana facts that tell us this wonderful fruit offers many healthy benefits.

From the beginning there is an interesting story about bananas. Bananas are not fully ripened on the tree, they are picked when 75% ripe to prevent them from splitting open and becoming infested with insects.

During shipping the ripening process continues, involving a chemical change whereby protopectin is converted into soluble pectin. Starch is also converted into sugars of which 20% is glucose, 14% is fructose and the remaining 66% is sucrose.

How Bananas Ripen - Ethylene

Banana AdRipening bananas give of a gas called ethylene, which develops the color along with ripening. Most fruits give off this gas as they're ripening; however bananas give of an exceptionally large amount. So much ethylene is given off that it can actually assist other fruit to ripen if it is in proximity. A ripening banana in a sealed container with green tomatoes will help them ripen quite quickly.

As an aside, did you know that green oranges are exposed to high levels of ethylene in order to turn them orange? People want their oranges to be orange, green ones; even though they may be ripe are just not the same; but back to the banana facts.

Banana Facts

The unique smell of a banana is caused by amyl acetate.

Bananas also have a calming effect; this is because they contain an amino acid called tryptophan. This is converted to serotonin and causes a calming effect because it is a brain inhibiting neurotransmitter. As well as being an internal lubricant, green bananas are used in the treatment of hemorrhoids and diarrhea.

In fact, an amazing diarrhea remedy that really works well is to mash a banana with a couple tablespoons of carob and eat! Soon the diarrhea will be gone.

More than just a tasty fruit, the skin of a banana contains esterified fatty acids, which can be used as a skin lotion. Natives rub banana peels on their skin problems; which is supported by modern research, which says that banana peels used on red, scaly patches of psoriasis will provide a natural relief. Exorex lotion is a patented lotion created from the isolation of the esterified fatty acids and is sold commercially.

Vitamin B6, which is good for carpel tunnel suffers and vitamins A and B, as well as dietary fiber, magnesium, iron, calcium are in bananas. They are also rich with niacin, riboflavin and potassium. Bananas have a high-energy value, which makes them ideal for people on the go, and have also been used to help replenish potassium that is lost during bouts of vomiting and diarrhea.

There are small amounts of pectin contained in bananas. This is a food fiber that prevents the absorption of fat, which may help in lowering cholesterol levels; however pectin should not be consumed at the same time as foods that contain essential fatty acids that the body needs, such as fish. Bananas also have a small amount of hemicellulose which is an indigestible fiber and they are also low in sodium.

Only Eat Ripe Bananas

Make sure your bananas are fully ripe when you eat them. Apart from being unpleasant to eat, green bananas can also be quite harmful. Green bananas nutrition contains proteins that limit the digestion of complex carbohydrates; this is because they inhibit the amylase enzyme.

There is a way to prolong the life of a ripe banana. By putting them in the fridge it will slow the ripening of the fruit by slowing the enzyme actions. This will darken the skin by releasing polyphenoloxide. This means that the skin may go brown but the fruit on the inside will still be great for eating.

However if you do leave them a little too long you can use over-ripe bananas in cooking including pancakes and banana bread. You can even freeze a banana. If you peel them and eat them quickly before they go mushy this can be a very tasty treat. Better yet, put a few of them in a blender for a fabulous frozen banana smoothie.

When to Avoid Bananas

Banana BunchIt is not all good news for the banana though; there are some effects that we should be aware off. Bananas can interfere with the effectiveness of some drugs; an antidepressant or antihypertensives known as MAO inhibitors (monoamine oxidase) is one such drug. MAO inhibitors work by inhibiting the action of Tyramine, an enzyme that constricts blood vessels and raises blood pressure.

Tyramine, is found in bananas; which means the effectiveness of drugs that reduce Tyramine such as MAO inhibitors are less effective and can result in a hypertensive crisis or raised blood pressure.

There are several foods that can create a false positive when testing for tumor markers. Carcinoid tumors can arise from the lungs, intestines and the endocrine system. These tumors secrete serotonin, so the test for these tumors is the measure the amount of serotonin that is in the body.

Serotonin is excreted from the body in the urine, and the level is therefore measured by testing for the amount of serotonin that is contained in the urine. As mentioned earlier, bananas contain a large amount of serotonin and therefore will create a raised level in the urine, which can be interpreted as the detection of tumors, even if it is not the case. It is important that you do not consume bananas for at least three days before one of these tests.

Bananas are not alone in creating this effect. There are other foods that will produce the same results, including walnuts, plums, tomatoes, eggplant, avocado and pineapple.

Comparing Apples and Bananas

Moving on from banana facts and banana nutrition lets have a brief look at another favorite fruit, the apple.

We have all heard the expression "an apple a day can keep the doctor away"; well there is a lot of truth in this wisdom. The apple does a number of things for the body. It can cleanse the lungs of phlegm, stimulate the appetite as well as boost the immune system. Fresh apple juice is great fro cleaning the gall bladder and the liver, but there is also something more to the humble apple.

Apples aid in the removal of toxic metals from the body such as mercury and lead and assist in binding radioactive residues to enable to body to excrete them. Because an apple contains malic and tartaric acid, this helps to prevent gastric fermentation which then assists in preventing bacterial growth in the digestive system.

Beware of Pesticides and Chemical Sprays

Apple and Banana CaloriesOne problem with apples is that they are usually grown with the aid of chemical sprays and pesticides. Washing an apple before eating will help to remove this but it doesnot eliminate it entirely. A lot of these chemicals are sprayed on the actual apple tree. They are then dripped into the soil and absorbed by the tree. The fruit of the tree then contains these chemicals from the inside out as well as the outside in. To avoid this you should consider organic apples. Although they are not as pretty, they are certainly better for you and are generally a great deal tastier as well.

To eat commercially or non-organic fruit is like eating nice healthy food with a dash of poison added for effect. In order to get the full benefit of a healthy diet that contains lots of fresh fruit and vegetables you have to seriously consider organic produce. You don't need the poison.

Here are some places where you can obtain organically grown apples.

Are ripe bananas and avocados fattening?

Dear Sna, A ripe banana does have a higher sugar content than a greener banana, therefore the calories are higher, but the food value is good. An avocado has a high fat content, but the fats in the avocado are good fats.

Can someone tell more more about the difference between what is good fat, like in an avocado, and why eating an avocado doesn't promote weight gain like when I eat animal fat in a burger. Why are some fats good, and others like trans fats bad for us? Also, how can the sugar in a banana be good for me? Is it because it isn't processed?

Hi Sheila. We need fats in order to absorb nutrients such as fat soluble vitamins. All fats are not the same. Saturated fats are derived from animal products and have been shown to increase overall cholesterol and to raise the bad LDL cholesterol levels. Monounsaturated fats from foods such as avocados or olive oil lower total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, and then raise the HDL or good cholesterol in the body. Polyunsaturated fats like those found in fish and sunflower oil can also lower total cholesterol and LDL. Trans Fats are hydrogenated. This gives them a longer shelf life. They have been found to increase bad cholesterol and lower good cholesterol and are not recommended in any diet. They are often found in baked goods and fast foods such as fries. The avocado has a good deal of monounsaturated fat, and it is also high in B vitamins, vitamin E and also K. As for bananas being a better sugar. It would be better perhaps to say that the banana has food value and happens to contain sugar. They are high in vitamin A, B6, C, and potassium.

Dear Wendy, Unripe bananas are difficult to digest because they contain a starch which cannot be broken down by the human digestive system, and as such, can cause putrefaction in the intestines which in turn, may cause bloating, indigestion, gas, and water retention. In a ripened banana, this starch is converted into three types of sugar: sucrose, fructose, and glucose. These sugars provide energy for a complete workout and for sustained exercise, thus making a ripe banana the snack of choice for athletes. Bananas also contains a rich source of potassium, fiber, and protein. As far as the caloric content goes, both an unripe and ripened banana would contain the same amount of calories, depending upon it's size about 100-120 calories. The difference between an unripe vs. a ripe banana is in the amount of starch to sugar content, with a ripe banana containing about 25-20 grams of starch, and usually about14 grams of sugar. An unripened banana would contain more starch and less sugar than a ripe banana. I see no benefit from eating unripe bananas since they are not as digestible unless they are cooked. The cooking would then render the banana more digestible.

I have brain mets and am under treatment but eat bananas every morning. Is there a potential for feeding the tumors in my brain in the process of trying to help myself? Thank you in advance.

Dear Kathy, I am assuming that when you say "brain mets," that you have a certain form of cancer that has metastasized to the brain? In the article above, the author mentions that after ingesting bananas, they release serotonin in the urine, thus giving a false positive for the presence of serotonin in the urine. If you are being monitored for seratonin levels in the urine, then after eating bananas, it could give the doctor the false impression that your medications are not working properly or that your tumors are spreading. Bananas and serotonin do not cause tumors. However, you should probably not eat bananas if you are being monitored for urine levels. I hope this clarifies your confusion.

Hi, I've been told that drinking the water that's had the skin of a banana boiled in it is a mood enhancer, often used in third world countries as a cheap treatment for depression. I suffer from PMT and have been trying it, steeping green tea in the cooling water for added benefit, my children think I'm nuts, but are happy to supply me with their skins. I'm interested in your opinion on the matter. I feel it's had some effect even if it's psychosomatic.

Dear Jill, last year, in 2007, a group of Taiwan researchers from Taichung's Chung Shan Medical University discovered that banana peel extract can be used to treat depression. Banana peels contain seratonin, a brain chemical which is responsible for maintaining mood elevation. Serotonin can be released by boiling the banana peels in water and then drinking the solution, or by juicing the banana peels in a blender or juicer and then drinking the juice. Evenings appear to be the best time to drink this concoction. Another interesting tidbit is that banana peel also contains lutein, which is a powerful antioxidant important for eye health. The same Taiwan researchers found that banana peels can also help to prevent the retina of the eye from damage and degeneration. The only danger in eating bananas or drinking the juice from the peels would be to someone who has a latex or rubber allergy. Bananas belong to the same plant family as the rubber tree. Otherwise, enjoy your unusual evening drink.

I have another question about the banana peel. I usually eat bananas "as they do it in Asia" with the peel. But I've never found any nutritional information about the banana peel, especially about calories and dietary fiber content.

One small point of clarification for anyone reading this. Green (unripe) bananas can and are eaten with no ill effect, though they are boiled or baked. Green bananas are a common breakfast dish throughout the Caribbean, particularly Jamaica and the Dominican Republic.

Bananas also help cure Warts. I had warts on the bottom of my feet or years, and I tried everything from duct tape, to having them frozen off, as well as applying other harsh chemicals to them. But instead of getting better they got worse. I used to hate bananas, and ironically two weeks ago I started eating them, and my warts have gone away. It was a potassium deficiency. Who would have that bananas would be a natural cure to warts.

Research has shown that two bananas a day can lower blood pressure. This was found in 1997 study which concluded that 5 bananas a day had the same effect as blood pressure lowering drugs. Also another study conducted in India in 1999 showed that two bananas a day lowered blood pressure by 10%. Now I am not sure how may calories five bananas a day would add?

Hi Lynn, you can put them in the refrigerator. The skin will turn dark brown or black though, but the inside will be fine. Try putting them in an airtight baggie first and then put them in. Also lots of people peel them and just freeze them for later use in smoothies etc.
