Endometriosis Symptoms - Treatment with Holistic Products

Endometriosis is an ailment that affects women during reproductive years.

This is one of the most common causes of pelvic pain and infertility in women. During every menstrual cycle, the tissue lining found in the innerside of the uterus, has the tendency to built up and begins to shed every month and this tissue is called the Endometrium tissue.

In endometriosis, this tissue grows and sheds outside the uterus. This misplaced tissue then forms growths or lesions, which respond to the menstrual cycle in the same way as the tissue lining the uterus. Endometriosis generally affects women during their menstruating years.

Symptoms: The symptoms of endometriosis are most seen in women during their first menstrual year. Most of the women do not find any or possibly all endometriosis symptoms after menopause. According to statistics, about thirty to forty percent of women suffering from endometriosis have difficulty in conceiving.

During the endometriosis stages, the endometrial growth causes pain and leads to infertility and other problems. In endometriosis, the menstrual blood flows out through the vagina, but the blood and tissue shed from these growths has no outlet and hence, it results in internal bleeding and inflammation of the surrounding areas and also forms scar tissue. Endometrial growth is usually not malignant or cancerous. The exact source of this problem is not yet found, but excess estrogen secretion can irritate and trigger the ailment.

Treatments: Pregnancy gives a temporary respite to the symptoms. Infertility persists as long as this disease is present and therefore women are advised early pregnancy if they show signs of endometriosis. Currently, there is no cure for this women's health ailment, though some women show respite during menopause. Hysterectomy, surgery and removal of the endometrial growth or ovaries are the treatments advised to such patients. Herbal treatments can be extremely effective in controlling the condition and may be preferred line of defense and relief.

Researchers state that patients who have undergone hysterectomy for endometriosis experience a regrowth. Drugs that are prescribed for this treatment are male hormone derivative, danazol and sometimes progesterone or birth control pills. Danazol reduces the size of the existing tissue and thus prevents ovulation. Hormonal therapies have different degrees of side effects and unfortunately, the pain relieve which is credited to these treatments are temporary.

Cleansing-Research by the Endometriosis Association indicates a link between dioxin or TCCD exposure and progress of endometriosis. Dioxin is a toxic chemical, which is a byproduct of pesticide manufacturing, paper products and bleached pulp. Magnesium is a toxin flusher and very helpful to ease the condition.

I have had tests that show excessive tissue growth in my uterus and was prescribed prenatal vitamins with iron, and also low dose birth control pills. My iron levels were very low as the bleeding had been going on for months. My level of vitamin D was also very low. Things have improved with the birth control pills, but they cause me to feel sick and my eyes are so blood shot when I take them. How can I manage this without taking the pills.

Dear Debra, Endometriosis is a build of of endometrial tissue which lines the wall of the uterus. This build up of tissue is misplaced and ends up outside the uterus and can bleed during the regular monthly menses, thus causing anemia or low iron stores because of the excessive bleeding. Low Vitamin D levels have also been recently implicated in a myriad of different degenerative diseases so it might be good to supplement, under your doctor's supervision and continuous monitoring of your Vitamin D to reach the optimum level. Excess estrogen is considered one of the causes of endometriosis so your doctor prescribed birth control pills to keep the amount of estrogen and progesterone in balance and to help with estrogen dominance or excess estrogen. Unfortunately, birth control pills consist of synthetic progestins and sometimes synthetic estrogen, which Naturopathic doctors abhor because of the side effects. If you want to see if natural medicine can balance your hormones, you might want to find a Naturopathic physician in your area and see if he or she can assist you in this matter with using naturally compounded pharmaceutical grade progesterone, but not in creme formulations, to stem your body's excess estrogen production and to measure your hormones using a salivary test to determine the extent of your imbalance. Your Naturopathic doctor can also prescribe an individualized herbal formula for you depending upon the results of your saliva test. Good luck.

Dr. Leia, I read your answer to Debra and I also have a similar situation. The excess tissue has not moved beyond my uterus but I have really heavy periods. You mention naturally compounded progesterone, but not in a cream. Dr. Lee mentions cream progesterone as his preference and I have recently read some of his work, so what is your take on Dr. Lee's work with women's health issues, and if not a cream progesterone what other type is there and why is it more beneficial than a cream progesterone?

Dear Beverly, Topical progesterone cremes accumulate in the body and do not release evenly into the bloodstream and body tissues, but rather are released in spurts. This creates an imbalance of progesterone at the desired specific times of a woman's cycle by this haphazard release. Also, the progesterone seems to accumulate and build up in the body tissue when the creme is used for over three months topically. Initially, the woman will feel great because of the addition of this sorely needed hormone, but after many months, she may ride the roller coaster of emotions and physical symptoms due to the irregular release pattern. Dr. Lee has done the world a great favor with his book about the importance of natural progesterone and I applaud him for introducing the women of the world to this powerful substance. Natural progesterone is incomparable to synthetic progesterone which is responsible for a myriad of negative health effects on the body. I am not a fan of over-the-counter progesterone cremes or self dosing, and feel that hormone replacement should be monitored by a qualified health care provider or licensed Naturopathic doctor who specializes in hormone replacement and who can order the necessary testing of such hormones before prescribing the correct doses. Compounding pharmacies are available to compound micronized progesterone capsules and sublingual lozenges or troches, and a sublingual liquid progesterone solution which is my personal favorite.
