Holistic Anatomy: An Integrative Guide to the Human Body

Holistic Anatomy: An Integrative Guide to the Human Body was authored by Pip Waller and published by North Atlantic.

Finally!

As a yoga teacher and massage therapist I have sat through my share of anatomy courses: Hours of excruciating detail, analytical doctors and chiropractors presenting bones and systems as though they were independent entities within the human form.

Holistic Anatomy is a breath of fresh air for anyone who is interested in the human body but isn’t quite ready for medical school.

Must Have If You’re Learning Anatomy

This health book written by Pip Waller presents the materials in a holistic, big-picture way, and offers a considerable amount of detail.

The book’s easy to use format makes it an important anatomy book for students, and healers within any holistic discipline.

Pip Waller has a fantastic sense of humor, and the book is much more than a course in anatomy. Instead Waller goes beyond the typical approach and includes an entire chapter called “Dropping the Rope-Death and Dying” as well as chapters on Emotional Health, Western Pathology, and “Moving Toward a Holistic Paradigm”

Human Anatomy Made Easy

You will also find crisp and witty information on all of the bodies major systems.

Some of the body systems covered include:

  • Cell structure
  • Skin
  • Respiration
  • Digestion
  • Skeletal
  • Immune systems

…plus “The Birds and the Bees,” and an entire chapter on “How The Body Systems (and Everything) Interconnect.

Looking Through the Eyes of Waller

Waller is warm and engaging and approaches many topics through her own lens, including her own battle with “Going Grey.”

She says “Have you noticed how few people have grey hair today? It looks to me like an epidemic of covering up. I am beginning to go grey myself now, so this is a topical issue for me! I know that most hair dyes are poisonous-polluting for the environment and actually toxic for us, being absorbed into the body through the delicate skin of the scalp.” (278)

Holistic Anatomy Book CoverPip later relates that long-term use of hair color has been related to lymphatic cancer and lets us know that “almost all mainstream toiletries contain at least one carcinogenic chemical.” (278)

In short, this book is easy to read and reference and would complement any adult education anatomy course or home library.

The text would also be useful for home school education as well as acupuncture, chiropractic, massage and yoga education.

I just wish Pip had written it ten years ago.
