Using Essential Oils Recipes to Cure Male Pattern Baldness

By Toria Betson

“A woman’s hair is her crowning glory,” the doctor said to me with compassion-filled eyes.

I was sitting on the cracked vinyl exam table, unable to believe my ears. The specialist I had been sent to, because my hair was falling out at an alarming rate, had just told me I was experiencing Male Pattern Baldness.

He tried to console me with the explanation that, in woman, Male Pattern Baldness usually just thins the hair, and wasn’t as likely to leave large empty patches, as it does in men. He explained that it was a permanent state, and there was nothing he could do about it, other than prescribe Rogaine. Apparently, once one starts Rogaine, they must stay on it forever, or the hair they grew back will all fall out. My throat felt as dry and dusty as the fiber art decor hanging on the walls, there since the early 1970′s.

Male Pattern Baldness? Well, I wasn’t about to accept that diagnosis!

So, I immediately made an appointment to start acupuncture treatments, and created the following hair loss essential oils recipes:

Hot Oil Treatment

1/2 cup olive oil
3 drops tea tree oil
4 drops of rosemary essential oil
3 drops of lavender essential oil

Essential Oil RecipeWarm the oil.

Gently massage the mixture into the scalp. Cover with a shower cap. A plastic bag or plastic wrap will do in a pinch.

You may increase the effect by wrapping all of this with a towel that has been soaked in hot water and wrung out.

Leave it on for at least 30 minutes, then shampoo as normal.

Shampoo

To a mild shampoo, add 8 to 10 drops tea tree oil

Hair Rinse

1 cup boiling water
1 teaspoon (or more) dried stinging nettles
1 teaspoon (or more) dried sage
1 generous splash apple cider vinegar (Get the good kind, with apple sediment at the bottom)

Add the herbs to the boiling water to make a strong tea. I use tea balls, but you may also add the herbs directly to the water and strain before using. Allow the tea to steep until it has cooled to room temperature.

Add a generous splash of apple cider vinegar. Use after shampooing and conditioning. Rinse thoroughly. The vinegar smell will disappear as the hair dries.

I am happy to report that a year has passed, and once again, I have a full, healthy, head of hair!

How often did you have to do this regimen?

  2. Victoria Betson says:

Hi Josh, Thank you for your question. I continue to use the shampoo and rinse every time I wash my hair. I used the hot oil treatment twice a week, until my hair started growing back in, in all areas. Now I only use the hot oil once or twice a month.

Do I need to leave my hair without any gel products etc. for this treatment to be effective or do the gel products interfere? Thanks

  4. Toria Betson says:

Hi Glen, Good question. I assume you’re asking about the hot oil treatment, as the shampoo will remove the gel as it works. While the oil treatment is good for the hair, it is primarily for the scalp, so unless the gel is very thick and glossy, and applied directly to your scalp, interference should be minimal.

  5. Sue says:

Regarding the shampoo instructions: what amount of shampoo are you adding 8 to 10 drops of tea tree oil to?

  6. Sandy says:

Sue, you would add 8 to 10 drops of essential tea tree oil to the amount of shampoo that is normally recommended. Some people use a little less, others a little more. I imagine it would be safe to say between a teaspoon or two. If you were to use more than that it would probably be too much shampoo for your hair.

    Hi, Toria-

I’ve been getting acupuncture treatments for thinning hair and I’ve also been using a Chinese herbal stimulating shampoo, as well as taking Chinese herbs.

Would you recommend this treatment in addition to all that, or did you find the acupuncture and herbs unnecessary? Thanks.

  8. Aaron says:

Hi, I actually had some questions, I am a little bit of a skeptic. Before you started using this method was your hair noticeably thinning, or was it something only you noticed? When you say to use the rinse mixture after you shampoo, are you still able to run water over head after you use the mixture? My hair is balding very fast, although I am not bald yet it is still very noticeable. So I was wondering if I should even bother with this because I have wasted sooooo much money already on other remedies.
Also, my rapid hair loss is also due to my underactive thyroid and VERY high stress levels, so do you think I will respond to this very well? Ok last question… the last time I got acupuncture the lady said that my back was a flaming red color which mean that the person is very stressed correct? Should I try doing acupuncture again because it almost scares me?

Sorry for all the questions but I just had to ask.

    Thank you,
    Aaron.

    Hi Aaron,

This is a very easy and inexpensive remedy to try. Just get some quality shampoo that doesn’t have sodium laureth sulfate in it, (a good organic and natural shampoo) Then add the trea tree oil. Make the rinse and keep in in your shower. Use the rinse as a final rinse and rub it in a bit, then rinse off. Also, acupressure may help, too. Another method we have heard about is > Natural Remedy for Hair Loss

I have been losing my hair gradually since the birth of my 4th child and now its so noticeable at the front and sides of my scalp. Do you think it is the scalp that is the reason for the hair shafts falling out as I have noticed that its become very dry scaly and sometimes itchy? I am at my wits end with it and will try this recipe as it’s ingredients are within my home. Thank you and I hope and pray it works.

I have a question. I find this page so helpful. I’m using a shampoo that helps to reduce the number of hairs that fall out. It really helped me, but it isn’t doing anything for my already bald patches. I’m curious, could I add some drops of rosemary essential oil in my shampoo? I mean in the whole shampoo bottle (250 ml) and than shake it. I’m afraid that it will cause an allergic reaction. I read that essential oils can cause a reaction if there is no base to dilute with them. If not then how many drops should I put in the whole shampoo bottle?

  12. Shankar says:

    Hi Toria,

I am a 32 year old male. I’ve been losing quite a bit of hair for the last two years, especially at the crown and it has gone bald. I also have itching problem in my head and I was diagnosed for fungal infection of the roots. The itching is still continuing. Is it possible to cure it and is it possible to grow hair once again in my crown?

  13. Mova says:

Hi! does anybody know where we can get all these oil’s from? Is there a particular type of store that sells them? Also I have heard great things about Saw Palmetto, but is that any different from Saw Palmetto Tincture (where can I purchase from)? I understand that the Saw Palmetto is best to be purchased in form of liquid as opposed to pills. Can anybody that has tried Saw Palmetto shed some light on on this?

I will tell you that I injected my scalp with Cortisone and that worked very well, however, after I stopped my two treatments and my hair re-grew I stopped the injections and my hair started falling out again. I want to try a more natural way before I go back to injecting my scalp with Cortisone again.

    -Thanks

Hi Mova … Yes get them at: Mountain Rose Herbs

  16. Ali says:

Thanks for this. I just have one question. How long did it take for you to see results?

  17. Hi Toria, I enjoyed your article very much. I just wanted to add that I have used the essential oils of spruce, pine, cypress and rosemary with success on my husband and brother. I layered them on the scalp at bedtime and then they washed their hair in the morning.

  18. Sara says:

Hi, can I add saw palmetto oil into oil treatment and if yes, in what proportion? Please reply to my query. I’m very worried about my hair.

  20. Tria says:

  22. Hitesh says:

I am a 19 yr. old male. I have a receding hairline in the shape of M and my hair is also thinning from the crown portion. I have tried so many products but none of them were effective, and I am really worried I am going bald. But no one goes bald at this age.

  23. Gokila says:

Please write down the name of the shampoo which reduces hair fall. It will be helpful for others.
