4 ways to ease teen depression

Depression is devastating, especially among teens. However, only 1 teen in 5 is actually seeking treatment for their symptoms. Although exercise isn’t a cure-all, recent studies from the Journal of Sports and Exercise Psychology concluded that workouts that get your heart pumping may help boost your happiness. But you don’t need to break a sweat to combat your feelings of sadness and despair. The following activities are ways in which you can boost your mood and ease your symptoms of depression.

1. Take Up a New Hobby

It can be difficult to overcome the obstacles that may be triggering your depression. But participating in certain activities may help your life become more rounded as you can find passions you’re devoted to. When you find a new hobby to participate in, you’re developing skills that will help you become well-rounded. In order to prevent yourself from becoming unmotivated, make sure the hobby is something that you really enjoy doing. Whether it’s a cooking class, painting, music lessons or gardening, the project should instill a strong interest from within.

2. Play Video Games

Science has a better understanding of how video games can assist those struggling with mental illness. Although moderation is important, specifically created fantasy video games may help people with depression. Whether it is sadness, anger, loneliness or despair that you are fighting, the games can help you with something personal. Puzzles are a great option to help teens lower their stress and anxiety. Casual games such as Bejeweled and Candy Crush can even improve your mood. Today’s games are designed to help give teens a better understanding of what they are going through and why. Depression Quest offers teens a hands-on experience through the life of a depressed person. This can make teens feel better understood and less alone. Paradigm Malibu understands teens’ needs was designed to help treat their core issues. By getting treatment for depression, your teen will be able to deal with their feelings in a more positive manner. They’ll also know that they’re not alone in their suffering.

3. Break a Sweat

Research has shown that people who are physically active reported happier feelings and more enthusiasm than individuals who are less active. Exercise has also been shown to reduce stress, lower symptoms of depression and help you sleep better at night. Whether you go for a bike ride, a run or a jog, the movements make a great addition to your mental health treatment plan. Shown to stimulate brain chemicals that depressive patients may be lacking, your gym membership may hold the key to a great cardio workout. Boot camp, Zumba, PiYo and kick boxing are excellent forms of aerobic exercise. Encourage your teen to enter a fun race such as a 5K. They may get a goody bag filled with a t-shirt and other gifts. Plus, they may meet new people and get a high from their accomplishment.

4. Strong Muscles

A recent study found that boosting your strength could also help improve your happiness. During a 10 week strengthening training plan, the 45 individuals selected who suffered from depression reduced their symptoms greatly by lifting weights. Strength training is about control and mastery because it requires concentration. Through your training and dedication, you can also see the results of your efforts. Although you want to start with small weights and gradually, lifting weights a few times a week can be a great way to a healthier mind and body. A personal trainer may also have suggestions on the best exercises to try.

If you’re depressed, you may feel unmotivated to break out of the stupor. But depression doesn’t go away on its own accord. With the right counseling program and some of the above activities, you can take back your life and feel better.
